I have a few of these cardinal-like birds at The Hideout.

I have no idea how to pronounce it. Is there a common name that I can use in conversation?

They look a lot like a female cardinal, but have more red, yellow (vs. red) beaks. The red on the male is at the tip of the crest and on the front. The hen is easy to mistake for a hen cardinal except for the yellow beak.

If you don't know a common name, how the devil do you pronounce "PYRRHULOXIA??

JB, according to my bird dictionary, it's a cardinallike grosbeak of the Southwestern US and Mexico, having a bill superficially resembling that of a parrot. I personnally like "gray cardinal" over "grosbeak" myself, so I think that's what I'd call it. Sounds better.

I wish I had my sibley field guide. I'll look it up tonight, as another source, and because I like identifying birds too. I took son on a boat access only primitive campout this past weekend. Think I might have seen a piping plover. Will have to go out again with the book to make sure.

Hmmm.

It would probably take more that I have to make a pyrrhuloxia, stewed tomato and okra sandwich on pan pone, Bubba.

Now armadillos, those I have in great abundance. Make jambalaya that is gooder than bugs!

That red cardinal is a little bigger, and tastes the same! What's your favorite part of the squirrel Bubba? I joke about this, but have eaten squirrel many times. ;)
