1981 Evinude E115TLCIH.

Just picked up this outboard about a month ago. So I don't know any of the history on the motor.

What I have done since I got it is:
1: Checked Plugs, dark, no deposits
2: Checked Compression, 116 psi in all cyl.
3: Changed water pump complete.
4: Rebuilt carbs, but did not adjust low speed mixture.
5: Sync.

I hadn't put alot of time on the motor until this past Friday. When I loaded the boat back on the trailer I noticed some spent 2-stroke oil leaking down the lower unit. It was leaking six inches to the left of the exhaust relief holes where the lower unit housing meets the flaring below the lower engine cowling. (left looking from behind)

Friday I was fishing and was idling for most of the day (4-5 hours) bumping in and out of gear to stay over structure. Had about a six mile run back to the ramp.

When I did the waterpump I had to run out to the parts store to get gaskets for the exhaust extension tube inside the lower unit. The ones that were there were out of shape and appeared to be "pinched" in places like they weren't making a good seal. If I didn't get them in correctly could this cause the leaking from the upper driveshaft housing?

I'm assuming that at idle, there isn't enough pressure to force exhaust out the prop. Instead it is supposed to exit the exhaust relief holes. What would cause the oil to show up as described instead of at the relief holes?

If anybody has any ideas I would appreciate hearing them.

pbailey

You said you had been idling along for a few hours...I would suspect this is where the build up of fluid came from. The blackness of the fluid will be from old carbon in the block.

Sounds like its time to DeCarb.

and if you want to troll around or idle around....get an engine that is made for it. :)

TMD

Thanks TMD,

I understand the reason for the oil. But should it be leaking from the location described. Could the gasket between the powerhead and lower unit be leaking and if so is there a good way to tell without removing powerhead?

I will decarb next time I have it in the water.

pbailey

I think you are talking about the water drain hole on the left side?

Check the oil that comes out of there and compare it to your gear oil that is in the case.

If its not...somewhere up top there might be a small pinhole burned through the aluminum where the gas/carbon seeps out. Then runs down the leg and exits.

TMD

TMD,

This is not lower unit oil. It is spent or burnt 2-stroke oil. It is not leaking from the water drain holes in the lower unit.

It is leaking high on the exhaust housing appox. six inches to the left of the exhaust relief holes as view from the rear of the engine.

How would someone post a picture on this site? Maybe that would help in the desciption of the problem. Figured out how to post a photo.

When the boat was taken from the water the leak was more aft. When tilted up for transportation the leak moved forward to where you see it now.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/329276/evinrude.JPG

pbailey

pbailey

As I see it the leak can have two reasons:

1: leaky powerhead base gasket.

2: carb ( s ) flooding, leaky intake manifold, or other leak, leaking unburned gas down to cowling. It can flood through to what is seen on photo. Gas will evaporate, leaving oil and dirt. Bent or chipped reed valve will cause motor to spit fuel back through carb, will drip from silencer box.Carefully examine motor under hood to see where the mixture comes from. Post back.

Thanks, G DANE

Will do. I did have a problem of fuel leaking out carbs until I did the rebuild. Area around and under carbs is now dry.

Will check for source of leak and post back.

Thanks again

The gasket between the powerhead and the adapter may be leaking.

c/6

Hooty

I took the flaring off that bolts to the lower engine cowling. I rteally couldn't see where it was coming from, too much junk, grease and dirt built up in there.

Will have to clean it up real good and look again.

Will post up what I find.

pbailey
