So I hooked up the hose to my pressure washer and started it up. Warmed up for a second or two then I squeezed the trigger. Nothing. It then dawned on me that I never tunred on the water. I shut it down, turned on the water, and started it back up, and it's toast. It sprays, but about 1/2 the pressure it used to have.

What did I do and how much is it going to cost? It's a 6hp Excell 2400psi.

Re: Blew up my pressure washer.

I believe there are some seals inside the pump that can go bad. Look for a rebuild kit for your pump.

I'm going to take it apart tomorrow after work and try to see what happened. Do these things have rubber impellers like an outdrive? Are most of the pumps rebuildable? I've never taken one apart...

Re: Blew up my pressure washer.

I called the manufacturer, and they no longer offer the parts for this pump, only the entire pump as a unit. $147.06. I have the part numbers for the valve kit and the seal kit, but I can't find anyone who has them.

Valve kit - D23511
Seal kit - D23514

If anyone knows where I might find these drop me a note!

Thanks.

Check ebay for parts or even a new pump!

Don't know if they will have it but look here:

http://www.pressureparts.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=5

You might check the owner's manual and parts lists they have online to be sure you have the right part numhers. The numbers you listed appear to be for a Devilbliss pump, but the numbers don't match for a 2400psi Excell unit.

Re: Blew up my pressure washer.

I suspect you cracked/broke a ceramic piston head, it overheated, and the cold water finished it off.
the directions with my unit warn to sqeeze the triger and have a water flow while turning on the unit. reduces pressure on start up, there is a recylcle path for idleing, but should not be run too long for fear of overheatting.
a friend blew his unit by running a chlorine product thru it, chlorine is a solvent for neoprien(excuse spelling).
my favorite site for this type of thing is http://www.chpower.com/

2400 psi, is more p/washer than i would ever want to use. 1600 is a nice unit for home.

For what it is worth, the most common cause of frying a pump with these units is allowing it to "idle" or recycle for extended periods of time. That is...the unit is running, water is on, but you are not using it. This WILL burn up the pump. I recently had one rebuilt, but the rebuild was not much less than the cost you are quoting for a new pump.

Rabbit, it is an Ex-Cell washer, but the pump attached to it is definitely a DeVilbiss. Apparently Ex-Cell is a Devilbiss subsidiary or something like that. You are correct in that those are DeVilbiss numbers.

Looks like I'll be buying that replacement pump....

Thanks for the advice guys.

I would have thought that having the wand trigger depressed on starting would create a bigger load? It's the depressing of the trigger that causes the pump to pressurize the water.

my unit is several years old preceeding the design that the triger also turns on the pump. the pump on mine is alway on and it has a idle/releaf valve for momentary interuption is useing the wand.

Dispite the crummy web site you may want to give these guys a call. I believe they bootleg offshore parts and may have a solution to your discontinued rebuild kit. Might be worth a call..

http://www.pp-s.com/
