I am looking at a boat, but during the survey it was discovered to have blisteres in the bottom paint....about 6-8. They are not too big, about 3-4" in diameter.

How much $$ how this take to repair?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.....sorry I don't have pictures

Re: Blisters

It's usually not the bottom paint. It's in the gelcoat if true osmotic blistering. Can be a big job and pretty expensive to repair. There may be more places that just have not shown up yet. You have to remove all the gelcoat (below waterline)and replace it, at least in those places. Using a layer of CSM with vinylester resin under the gelcoat will help prevent future problems. This is about the only time you'll hear me suggest vinylester resin for anything.

Re: Blisters

I'd pass on this boat. The blisters are under the gelcoat - in the fiberglass. Blisters are formed from water that has penetrated the gelcoat and is dissolving the structural resin component of the fiberglass hull. Water continues to flow osmotically, building up pressure between the fiberglass hull and the gelcoat, forming blisters. Could be minor and localized or it could be more serious and everywhere.

There are plenty of other boats out there for sale, especially now, at the end of the season.
