Well, sneer and belittle if you must, dudes.

Sections of I20 and US 287 were closed and hundreds of travelers were stranded overnight.

Snow is not a normal thing here and our infrastructure, etc. is not equipped to deal with it.

Heat, drought and tornados we can handle.

Wanna trade?

Re: BLIZZARD in TEXAS!!!

JB if we trade...... I will even include my Chevy 2500 with the 9' plow because you will need it! ;)

I know with you living in that area I can only imagine that the highway departments are not equipped for that blast of snow.....

I promise even if we do not trade that it will all be gone by June! :p

You can blame it all on SANTA .....he needed snow to land the sleigh!:D

No thanks, we get heat, drought and tornados occasionally, with a hurricabe and a nor]easter thrown in for good measure.

All of our almoat 2' of snow is GONE, because in the last 24 hours we had a TON of rain and wind. We would have gotten another 2' if it was freezing.

Glad you got to experience something that doesn't happen often in your area! Gotta love mama nature.

JB.....What your saying is the truth and very much fact!!!

I was in Midland-Odessa for work a few years ago and the ding dongs an the Denver airport sent my luggage to Minnisota. So..had to venture out and buy some cloths. They were having what they called "a big snow storm" at the time. If memory serves me, they ended up getting aroung 3-3'' and it shut everthing down...even the 24 hour Walmart. While I was out trying to find something to wear for my meetings the next morning, I was truely amazed at the amount of cars and trucks that were either off the road or in an accident.

People up in the north seem to forget that some people in the south have rarely seen snow, let alone driven in it. So, I would say 6'' and a bit of wind would be a Bizzard in Texas. :)

JB, I don't think there is any sneering or belittling....maybe a bit of chain-yanking, and as DonS suggested a bit of "one upmanship".

There is nowhere that does not occasionally have weather events that outstrip the local infrastructure's ability to cope. That is when the local population needs to adjust their expectations for a day or two to allow things to return to near-normal; this seldom happens and that is when you find 193 cars in the ditch and 89-car chain-reaction collisions. Without decent snow tires, driving in the white stuff is a bit of a crap-shoot.

One of our major cities recently had a bit of a heavy dump of snow....and the mayor panicked and requested assistance from the Canadian military.

Now, HE was the subject of some "sneering and belittling"....:D

3-6 is still a dusting up here in New England. Shouldn't have a problem with any car/truck as long as you have decent tires and common sense.
That's the problem with snow, is people don't actually think about their speed.

Speed signs or not. Ya need to think about how fast you should be going, then go just a little slower than that.
I made it 40+ miles with 4-5 inches of fresh slushy snow on top of hardpack that was already on the highway in an 85 camaro v6 automatic 14inch wheeled rustbucket. Took me 2 hours, but I made it.

I still get in trouble every once in a while when i'm rippin donuts in my subaru though :)

Stay warm.;)

Re: BLIZZARD in TEXAS!!!

As mentioned already, most parts of Texas are not equipped to deal with snow. The biggest concern I have when it ices/snows is other drivers. A couple of weeks ago when it snowed here there was plenty of cars in ditches. Most people here have no experience driving in snow, myself included. When I'm up north for work related events I let other people drive me for that reason (as long as they are local and know how to deal with snow on a regular basis).
Heat is what most Texans are used to. I know that the heat waves that have caused many deaths up north would not have that effect on us southerners. Take the 1995 chicago heat wave that killed over six hundred for example. Those temps that killed all those people in Chicago would not have had that effect on southerners. The biggest contributer was the lack of people being equipped to deal with it. Check out these temps:
Chicago's daily low and high in 1995:
July 11: 73-90 ?F (23-32 ?C)
July 12: 76-98 ?F (24-37 ?C)
July 13: 81-106 ?F (27-41 ?C)
July 14: 84-102 ?F (29-39 ?C)
July 15: 77-99 ?F (25-37 ?C)
July 16: 76-94 ?F (24-34 ?C)
July 17: 73-89 ?F (23-32 ?C)
The humidity was really high but thats normal to us in the south. I have worked many summers outdoors with those temps also. They are a pain to deal with but they are normal to us.

I do think you guys up north have it rougher though. I have been unfortunate enough to have worked in northern states during the winter and found it absolutely miserable. I could barely move much less work. You northerners are tough fellas.

Guess not everything is bigger and badder in Texas...
I will explain this to you. Texas is so BIG and so BAD that, no puny snow would dare cover it. :D

Re: BLIZZARD in TEXAS!!!

i bet most homes in chi don't have ac. You would only use it a few months a year, so what is the point. I Texas I bet every house has A/C. That makes a big diff in a heat wave. We don't have A/C in out house, just a bunch of shade trees around it.

Thats exactly what I meant when I said people weren't equipped to deal with it.

Down here we don't have snow plows, snowblowers or anything else that goes with snow. Even a little snow is more than we can deal with usually.

Re: BLIZZARD in TEXAS!!!

The Hideout NEVER gets snow twice in the same year. . .well, until today.

About 3" on the ground, visibility 2/10mi, wind about 40, 34 degrees and dropping.

This is one reason I left Minnesota. I will be forbidden to travel to visit tomorrow, even with the Subaru. :(

Look out JB here it comes again

Yup, blaming this small dusting on you JB!!! :D

Re: BLIZZARD in TEXAS!!!

and up north the snow doesn't melt in 2 days. it stays till may. even in MD the snow is usually gone in a week or two. But up in The vermont area, it will not get about freezing for 3 straight months.
