Thought I would share some pictures of the blizzard from the past 2 weeks.
I remember when I was a kid, up until around 1987 every winter we had blizzards like this, but the past 15 or so years winters have been pretty mild.
I am trying to find pictures from when I was a kid, opening the front door of the house then digging out and up to get to the barn. Remember several years when we had to go out a second floor window then dig down to the door just to open the door.

But for the more recent winters around here this was a good one. Winds stayed up around 30 to 40 steady for several days.

pictures

Re: Blizzard pictures

It was predicted for a week or more. I worked night shift through it, it lasted several days. Each night there were travelers who were "caught off guard" so of course I was fighting the roads trying to get people into shelter the first night. It started with a pretty nice warm day, then started raining then a little hail, then it froze and turned to snow. The snow was falling and there was thunder and lightening for a while. Then the wind kicked up to 40 to 50 gusts.

The reallyu neat part was I am close to Interstate 80. About 200 miles of I80 were closed in Nebraska. All of the motels filled up right away. Every motel had people in the lobby, all rooms filled, and people sleeping inthe halls. Local people started bringing blankets and bedding to the motels without even being asked to. People got out with their tractors and 4x4's and made it to grocery stores for food. Go into the motels and they all looked like family reunuions, everyone talking playing games and having a good time. Food prep was a group effort, even cleaning up was a group event.

Good thing is, the snow west of here might actually fill the lake back up next spring!

Actually DD we havent seen it like that in a long while. I hear stories of people having to put neon ribbons on their car antennas to make cars visible over snow banks. Last time I have seen drifts similar to that was when we had a New Years Day blizzard a few years ago. Personally I love the stuff, I get all excited when snow comes. I still cant figure out why, its not like I ski or anything.

Pony Might attest to this.. While I love the snow, I HATE the frigid weather. Its been bear-arse cold for a while now and I'm hating it. I'd love to have a walloping snowstorm like that.

Sean

Re: Blizzard pictures

That'd be a '100 year' storm here. We've already had our seasonal 1/4" of snow...

Yup, some of those pics bring back memories of Madison Wisconsin when I lived there in the 70s. Car was always buried, always had to dig out the front door of the house. I don't think Wisconsin has had a lot of those types of winters lately...
