I have a 84 Celebrity open bow. I'm blowign fuses at the ignition switch. I removed the purple wire from the switch which keeps the fuse intact and turns over the engine...but no fire. It worked for a day after jostling the wires under the dash a bit. I'm sure i have a nasty short but can't seem to visually track it down. Where should I start/

I would look at the wiring around the solenoid first because it is the easiest to get at then the starter and work my way back.
but you have an intermitent problem and are going to hit it just right for the problem to be there.
is your starter making any funny sounds when it does work?

Ahh, purple wire also sends the power to the coil... you will likely not get any fire. the engine will crank, but not fire in this situation.

I would try to find the short, did you do any work recently?

Re: Blowing ignition fuses

It sounds like you think its a short under the dash and it very well might be..I had that exact intermitant problem jiggled and jiggled wires under the dash etc thought that was the problem then when I was looking into a unrelated issue in the engine compartment I noticed the coil wire was arcing and grounding out on the coil engine mount from time to time then blowing the ignition fuse on my dash.
I cleaned all the wire connections I could find in my engine and replaced the coil wire....havent had the problem since...I still carry a big box of spare fuses though...;)

Ive learned when trying to trouble shoot electrical problems on a boat the problem is never where you think it is, its always in the last place you would look.
If you list your engine model etc. Im sure somebody has an ignition diagram for your enigine that may help in the hunt for the problem,

OK....I'm a knuckle head!

A buddy came over and diagnosed/fixed it in about 10 minutes. I replaced the alternator 2 years ago...got the tach wires mixed up. I guess that's why wires are different colors!!

Thanks Guys!!
