All excited to go fishing around 5 pm today, got to my boat in my community boat slip and saw stuff all over my boat (my towels, poles, stern light etc). Basically sometime last night some dirtbags rummaged thru my boat and stole my fishing rod and reel. Everything else was left including stereo.

I got in last night from a lakeside restaurant around 11pm and left the cover off as i knew it would be nice out all weekend here (Lake Norman NC). I did not want to have to cover it and uncover it today etc. This is a neighborhood with cameras at the front entrence and the cheapest houses are about 500k most about 700k. I thought it would be safe, i now know it is not. Cops came to file a report for me and said it was probably some neighborhood kids.

Anyone else have things stolen out of their boat, now i know i cannot leave skis etc in it, what a joke. I am really pissed right now. Cops said covering it will probably ensure no one messes with it again but still this is ridiculous

Man that stinks Robert! Sorry to hear that.I doubt it was anyone in your neighborhood. People love to steal from those private docks late at night.
When i lived on Tillery my neighbor had his outdrive stolen one night with the boat hanging in the lift right behind our houses.
Just glad they only got the fishing pole.Could have been much worse.

Yeah, safety is kinda an illusion unless there's an armed guard watching the boat all night.

Basically when diving we assume that if it's left on the boat in the marina, it'll be gone in the morning.

Sorry for your loss, hopefully in that neighborhood someone will catch the kids and get 'em spanked.

Re: Boat Broken into what BS

I work out of town. I rent a house in a good neighborhood for out of town living.

About a month ago, my new BBQ grill, and push mower got stolen off of the front porch !!!!!!! (Both were chained up. Chain was cut.) Other neighbors got ripped off too. Everything had been left out for about a year and a half. This is a quiet neighborhood, and I was really shocked. Other things taken from neighbors, ranged from trivial stuff, to good stuff.

I understand how you feel.

If you don't mind me asking, whereabouts on Lake Norman are you at?

I think the signs that say under surveillance are just window dressing, i am getting the police report on thursday and will take it up with the HOA as they put cameras in at the enterence of the neighborhood, they should have a few at the docks

I live in Sailview, it is a crescent community like The Peninsula and The Pointe on the west side of the lake in Denver off the main channel.

The footprint on my seats was big so i dont think it was just a 12 year old kid, i think it was someone else, i have seen people fishing our docks who i am pretty sure dont live here. All i can do is raise a stink with the HOA and be happy they did not cause any property damage

I am off to buy a new rod and reel in about an hour so i can try again tonight, thanks theives, i wish i caught them in the act. I'm 6'5" 240, i would have drown the SOB's, i have no mercy or compassion for these types of people

Wonder if it was just someone looking to replace their broken tackle. Too damn cheap to buy their own. I live off McCrary Creek, a little off the beaten path. I have some neighbors who decided that video surveillance would be nice so we went in on a system together and setup. Pretty much anyone out here either lives here, is visiting someone living here, OR they don't belong. It is pretty easy to tell which is which as well. Only 3 or 4 homes on a mile stretch of road. Sorry to hear about your gear! Might see you around on the lake sometime! Look for a bright yellow hat and a 95 2050LS Capri in white/blue.

Where I am, they steal any fishing equipment, but the special target is small outboards. Anything 15hp and under is fair game, and they usually show up on Craigs List the next day. Even with the cops catching some of the thieves, they still get stolen.

The thieves aren't very persistent. All you have to do to stop them is use self-locking nuts on the bolts through the transom. None of the thieves have two wrenches with them. I went a little further, and counterbored the holes where the bolt heads fit. Only a thinwall socket will fit.

If you have a small outboard that is just clamped to your transom, watch out. It takes less than two minutes to unclamp in and walk off with it. Have your serial numbers written down, in case the cretin who stole it tries to list it on Craigs List.

Here they cruise the harbors stealing outboards, air conditioners, and generators, so people started locking and chaining them to the boats, then they changed to cutting the boat apart with electric chain & circle saws, powered by four stroke generators they already stole off the bigger boats.
Nice and fast.

People decided it was better to have the motor stolen, than to have the motor stolen and the boat cut apart, so they quit locking them to the boat.

It is like with my old convertible, the top used to cost $1500 and they would cut it just to look in the empty glove box. So I started leaving the glove box open and the door unlocked, they still would cut first, and then find out the door was already unlocked, so I just left the vent windows open and they finally stopped.

They load entire boats, stolen on order into barges, covering them up in coal or what ever, and in the morning they are across the boarder in Poland, headed for eastern Europe.

If you leave it on the boat here, you will loose it.

The thefts aren't new here or in the States, they have been doing this since I was a kid, it is just the methods that change. Until it is your boat, and your stuff, it is not a problem though.

I feel your pain. Had my truck broken into last night, and they got my lowerance GPS and a couple packs of smokes. Very quiet road. I just sold my boat to buy another, and thank god they didn't take the 1300 i had in an inside pocket of my raincoat. Spent all day changing locks on the camper, and shed. All locked tight now.

Sounds excatly like where I live. 100 slip marina, private, cameras, gated docks.
So to a couple scumbag kids it means nothing.
Cams (not good enough for an ID..never did catch them) were there 3am taking there sweet time, going through boats.
After an hour, you see the last two boats go up in a fire ball. One was my friends boat, JUST BOUGHT!
Jerks took a 5 gallon gas can out of one inflatable and tossed gas everywhere. Found the can in the back of my friends burnt to the waterline hull. Did $500,000 damage to 4 boats and docks. Last we can see in the tapes were them running away with a couple tool boxes.
Still pissed off...happened 3 years ago..think the reason torched was the extra locks he put on...sick little minds got even

I have been around Lake Norman almost since it was made and I have noticed that thefts are frequently higher around holiday weekends and also over the week of the 4th of July. Had a neighbor that had two jet ski's stolen over the 4th, and a friend who had a boat taken from my old pier over Memorial Day Weekend. Both were late at night by low life that probably wasn't usually in the area. Unfortuantely on Lake Norman they have the right to be one the water right up next to your pier or to where your land starts at the760 line. That makes it real easy for them to see everyting that you have and to get to it. Sent you a PM also
