I live on Lake Of The Woods, a big tourist fishing spot. The waves get big sometimes here is another example of people not paying attention.

From what i heard this boat had a live well in the back on one of the sides beings it was full of water that side of the boat favored the water. Waves were hitting the back of the boat and splashing in. Now while this was not a lot of water at once but over time a little water adds up to become a LOT of water. There was sever people on a 24 foot with the water and the right weight shift at the right time spells trouble.

6 of the 7 people got out with out injury's the 7th was trapped under the boat in a air pocket for over 4 hours. He did not know how to swim. I believe he was treated for Hypothermia and recovered 100%...

UPDATE****

The word is that the livewell pump hose came off and they were filling the livewell. I guess the water came quick and 4 guys went to the cabin to get life jackets and the water rushed to the front of the boat and flipped it. The only thing that kept it up was the fact that it flipped over and there was an air pocket trapped in the front of the boat. The guy that was trapped said he felt like it was only 15 minutes and it was almost 3 hours. They figure he must have passed out or something.

there's not much of that 24' of boat above the surface. Think about how hard it would be to find, or to cling to. And no one hanging on to it can get out of the water enough to beat hypothermia. We naively think we can be "OK" if something happens.
Also lesson to be learned: you do not have time to go below and grab something--life preserver, cell phone, ditch bag, sleeping child.
i watched a 25' sink last year--stern anchored--and learned a lot that day about my false sense of ability and safety.

With an air pocket, if you could swim, you are able to swim out right? Just because he wasn't able to swim, he wasn't able to make it out right?

Spent many hours on LOTW, some of them when she was "standing on edge". Not a good place to be if you aren't an expert boat handler. . . .

and

EVERYONE aboard is wearing a PFD.

I run Rainy Lake, and we just lost someone on the 1st. I went to school with him and work with is Dad. It is devastating!

They are looking for him as we chat. Life Jackets are your friend!

We don't have Big Tarverse Bay, but we do have Sand Bay.
