I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I see these abbreviations, terms and acronyms all the time and I really don't know what they are.

Deadrise
LOA
Displacement hull; semi-displacement hull
I know what a v-hull is, and a deep v, but what exactly is a "semi-v"?
chines
And there's a word for the distance between the waterline and the gunwale...

...all of the hull stuff - especially, what effect each thing has on ride, plane, spray, stability, etc.

Or maybe someone knows of a posting here somewhere that explains all this.

Re: Boat dimensions

So does this mean that you have not availed yourself of a Boating Safety Class that is presented by either the United States Power Squadron, or the Coast Guard Aux? If that is the case then you REALLY need to take a class, it will teach you about these terms, and so much more.

This may sound mean, but why should others take the time to educate you when you wont take the time to save your own life?

Course, you could always google the terms and get their definitions.

Wow! Nice attitude. iboats would be better off without answers like this... either help the guy or move along.

You are right, of course. Just got the wrong button pushed.

My apologies.

Re: Boat dimensions

OK, OK!

I do need to take a boater safety class before I buy a new boat in the coming year.

And apology accepted, Bob. :)

It had never occurred to me that I could simply Google a word to get the definition! Or use Wikipidia. Cool!

But one that I still can't get: LOA . Does that stand for "Length Over All"? And, if so, does that mean from the tip of the bow to the transom? Or to the prop on an i/o? Or the end of a swim platform?

Thanks!

Re: Boat dimensions

LOA, as you said, is "length over all" It is defined as the length of the boat from the point on the boat furthest forward to the most aft point.

However, this point is the manufacturer's original boat structure. If the boat was made with a bow pulpit formed in, and a swim platform as part of the form, then those are the points of reference (never the engines/outdrives).

But if the swim platforms and pulpits were added (attached by some mechanical means) then they are not part of the LOA.

However, this measure is only used when determining the actual, legally defined, size of the boat. As in licensing and insurance purposes.

If you are trying to determine the LOA for a marina"s slip fee , then it all counts, including the fly that stopped to rest on the pulpit.

Does that clear it up? LOL
