I'm sure this has topic has been covered, but I didn't have much luck with the search. When keeping an outboard powered craft in a slip what the preferred position of the engine, up or down? What are the pros on cons of each? Thanks for your thoughts.

Most OBs are stored up as you can often get the whole thing out of the water.

If you can them up-great. If you can't protect them with boat bottom paint (self ablative).

Wow quick responses! Thank you.

The motor comes up out of the water, I've just heard different things about motors are supposed to be kept vertical and that storing a motor in the up position can cause added stress to the transom. Probably irrational BUT I also get nervous seeing the prop sticking out past the end of the slip.

no issue as to the transom.

I'd leave it vertical for storage for a long time idle--like 8 months.

The only reason to leave it down is to protect from freezing.

I would keep it up. It keeps the Algae off at least...
I don't see how it would cause all that much stress to the transom as long as nobody is using it to climb in or out of the water:eek:

even then, someone using the motor as a ladder (REALLY bad idea, i know!) isn't anywhere as stressful as even partial throttle on a decent size outboard. Store it up, your motor will thank you!
