I have a 88 sunbird 5.7 its takeing on water when in the lake but not with the ears on pug is ok whats the best way to find were its comeing from or what should I check IM a car guy i no the motor
Those Mercruisers have rubber bellows that seals where the shift cable, driveshaft and sometimes exhaust tube exit the hull to the outdrive. Tilt the OD up and check them out. The exhaust bellow will not leak water into the boat, but the other two will.
If it is a Sunbird it would be an OMC, but the issue is the same - probably the rubber shift boot is cracked and leaking. Often a very slow leak which is almost impossible to see. But, it needs to be addressed because it will quickly ruin the outdrive - the water will lead to rust in the gimbal or U joints. Plus it could sink the boat.
