I recently was given a 19 ft 1989 citation with a 4.3 omc. While on my other boat an 18 ft merc 120hp i could plane slow or fast. On the citation it just pushes the bow straight up. Feels like its going to flip. Does this boat require hammering the gas to get it out of the water or what. Feels like im at a 45 degree angle when doing so. Cant get WOT since she wont come up. Any ideas of what to check. It has an 14.5x 19 prop. Drive does go all the way down at a slight angle down from the bottom of the boat.

Trim the drive up some. You have a Cobra drive with trim and tilt.

I do...they do the same thing just at smaller increments correct? First boat with both.

Tilt and trim is the same thing. Trim it higher. If your bow is plowing through the water as your title implies, you need to trim the drive up to get the bow up.
If you happen to have trim TABS too, bring them all the way up until planed also.

I mean by plowing the bow goes straight up and the aft end goes deep. Like this / . I was only trying it whith the drive all the way down. There are no trim tabs on the boat.

That was a really cool vid, but how in the hell did those motors keep running being submerged? Specially modified?

Are you pushing the throttle all the way forward and immediately? What I mean is, are you easing into the throttle or hammering it?

Re: Boat just plows through the water

I had a small bass boat once that stuck it's nose in the air and wouldn't plane off. It did OK with just me on board. But, as soon as I put a fishin' buddy on board, it would bury it's tail and stick it's nose in the air. The only way I could get on plane is if my buddy crawled up on the bow to force it down.

The answer was in the prop. I can't remember what it came from the factory with. But, it was set up for a higher top speed - small diameter & high pitch. I went to a slightly larger diameter and less pitch. In the end, I sacrificed about 3 - 5 mph top end. But, I could plane off very easily - no matter what load I had on board.

I would look in the direction of the prop. See what others in your area, with similar size, weight & power, are running. Just an idea......

I am just easing into the throttle. I am afraid it will flip...probably not just not used to the bow going that high. Ill ask around about the prop. My old boat used to do it when sterndrive covered in weeds, that is not the case here.

He's carrying 1/2 a ton of saturated flotation foam in the stern with not enough power to pull out of the hole.

If this is the case would trim tabs even help?

No they wont help, you should at least take a couple below deck core samples aft.

I already have one boat with no floor so not getting into that again....ill see what comes out with a few holes through the bilge to side stringers. Redoing the floor sucks and would never do again...I'd dump the boat first.

I gotta agree, it does sound like a case of waterlogged foam.
