I have a 4 Winns marquise 170 w/ a merc. 140 I/O, and a 19 deg. ss prop. When I am on plane the boat leans to the left badly, what could be the problem.

Re: Boat leans to the left

How do you distribute the weight in the boat? Is there anything heavy on that side that could be causing the problem? There are other weight-related possibilities, but I'd think they would cause the boat to lean even when not on plane.

Another thing to check is the anode behind the prop. It can be dialed in to keep the boat from pulling to one side. If it's worn down, or directed improperly, it could cause this problem.

A third thing would be to look for some kind of obstruction at the bottom of the transom that's causing the right side of the boat to lift up.

Good luck.

my vhull leans a lot too. mostly it's weight distribution for me. i have also noted though that in good breeze. i may need to counter steer the wind blowing my boat off corse, so, being a vhull, it leans whichever direction i'm fighting the wind.....

Re: Boat leans to the left

All single screw v-hull I/Os and OBs with right hand rotation props tend to lean to port on plane. Prop torque gives it that tendency. Also, the vertical trim tab is for steering torque, not boat lean, although a waaaay out of adjustment tab could cause you to use steering input to correct and that could cause lean (list). The boat should list slightly to starboard with you in it or a typical load. This helps counteract the prop torque. There could also be problems with the bottom that could cause this. Different props can be better or worse too.

Helm adjustable tabs can solve all of this if she is right to begin with. Can also fix things if she is wrong to begin with . . . Smart Tabs can help too, by going with a higher setting on the port side.

BTW, this needs to be moved to the Boat section. Definitely not an I/O issue unless your skeg is bent ;)

If you have one of those Dolefin or Stinger whale tails attached to your drive, that is what is causing this. At least it did on my boat when I added one of these.

I do have a stinger. Can this be adjusted so it doesn't lean so far.

Take it off and start over . . . Good call superprop, I missed the obvious.

Friends, don't let friends, use hydrofoils . . . (some exceptions understood)

The only way to adjust it is to change speed. The reason hydrofoils cause so any boats to lean is because they lift the stern at the centerline. On some boats they create enough lift that the boat becomes unstable and then "rolls" to one side or the other until there is more hull in the water.

'Wanna see the effect? Get a glass of water and take three pencils and lay them on the table. Set the glass ontop of the pencils, one exactly centered under it, and the other two at the outside edges of the glass. Lift the center pencil and try to keep the glass level. You won't be able to do it.
