spring of 2010 i bought the remote spot light from west marine cost was like 300 and its a spot light but i cant see nothing more then like 3 ft from the bow. i want to build a fram that will be higher then my bow and i wanted to install some lights like i want night to be day but cheap lol. what i was thinking is that walmart sells spot lights that comes 2 lights in a pack for trucks campers and boats and just buy 5 packs so 6 lights forward and two lights on each side for the sides, does anyone know if that will be a good idea? also if i have them lights it will draw alot of power so should i just install another alt for the battery for the lights?

Re: boat lights

Why would you want so many lights?

The spot light is the way to go. If you try to light it up like day it will not work. Your light will only work if it is reflecting off of an object and back to you. The more light the more haze you will see. I. e. you will see less. The only time running lights really work out is in narrow creeks etc. They will reflect objects on the bank back at you but really make it harder to see the channel.

Re: boat lights

lol can you imagine the battery drain 10 50w lights would have.... about 50amps an hr or so....so like 2hrs on a deep cycle... then night blind for the next hr..... and a huge bug magnet as well.
If you insist on more light like that I would suggest LED systems that employ cree or luxeon star LEDs. I would further suggest that the higher you get the light the better you would be able to see.... but the problem is practicality.

from my experience nothing but marker lights is best, except sometimes in marina.

Re: boat lights

Extremely bad idea. Such a setup is illegal while running, and will wreck your night vision.

a hand held million candle spotlight used for a brief second to light up/verify position/marker is fine...or docking...but never for running..the river I boat on is BLACK after dark and it is a little un nerving Id agree
