No a 4 cyl drive will be too low of a gear ratio. As for do it your self, if you have the factory manual, the drive specific tools to measure gear lash and rolling torque and all the shims you may need, then yea go for it.

Plus if you change to a Volvo drive you will need to add a seawater pump to the engine as there is none in the SX drive.

Howdy,

I also am interested in learning about the volvo pinta SX swap, but I don't know if one from a 4 cyl volvo would be ok on my v6.
You have an OMC Dog-clutch Cobra. there is no cheap way to swap an SX to that drive.

You're only options are to find another Cobra (of the correct ratio), buy the SEI conversion kit and switch, or find another engine/drive combination that'll fit your boat (Mercruiser or Volvo Penta)

Did someone recently change your drive oil?..................Like just before you used it last?

Last night before I took the boat out, I changed the lower unit gear oil. It did not have water in it and the old oil looked ok. I filled it all the way back up with fresh oil.

I guess I didn't read your first post all that carefully!!!!!!...

When you changed the oil, how exactly did you "pump" the "new" oil back into the drive?

Probably not the right way. I'm sure this is just going to be a really expensive lesson. I was taught to drain it and pump it in through the bottom hole. I learned on outboards. I had no idea about the upper unit unit it left me stranded on the water.

What's the correct procedure?

I think I found a $500 complete cobra that I'm going to get monday.

Sorry to hear that. You were taught wrong I'm afraid.

The Dog-Clutch Cobra MUST be filled via the "fill" port (middle one) or you trap an air bubble that eventually works it way to the top (and uncovers the upper gears)

you usually don't make it very far before it either seizes or destroys the upper gears (and rest of the drive)

If you're going to get another Cobra, I suggest you get an OEM OMC service manual and follow the procedures in it from now on.

Don't feel too bad though.....

When my Brother owned my boat (and when it had the 460 King Cobra installed) He took it to a Four Winns dealer in the SF Bay Area to get the drive "serviced".

When he got it back, he only made it about 1/2 way around the lake before it completely seized the drive. Seems the dealer "mechanic" serviced the drive "like a Mercruiser"

They replaced the drive with no lawyer'ing up!! (another dealer the year before had also serviced it......

They didn't even bother to put oil in it that time:eek:......another "experienced mechanic"......

Rick
