Re: Boat no longer goes top speed

After all said and done, the mystery is solved. We made to the last channel marker of the marina and the fuel pump seized up completely. So it's time to pull the old one off and pickup a new one on monday.

Not solved, just another question. WHY did the pump seize? Air? Water?

How did the bottom of the boat look when you took it out and cleaned it?

PS: Dirty boat bottom will not take out an electric fuel pump.

It's a mechanical pump, but I didn't realize that the water pump spins off of the same pulley. Once we pulled it all apart, it was the water pump that was seized. The last post was made in the time we came home to get the tools to pull the thing apart.

So all in all, I guess the problem isn't solved or at least we won't know until it's all put together.

Thanks for all the help.

::EDIT::
Well, scratch the water pump being the issue. After taking a better look at everything, the water pump is fine but were replacing the impeller anyways.

The fuel pump on the other hand is completely seized. The arm of the pump seized and in the process managed to grind down the shaft it rides on. So all in all, we need a new pump and the shaft that drives it.

Here's a quick update.

Since it's a mechanical pump, the shaft housing needed to be filled with oil. We didn't know that. We didn't even know that it was service point. For whatever reason, there was no oil in the housing and it ran dry. From that, the pump arm seized and managed to completely destroy the shaft.

So a new pump, related parts and ~750 later, lesson learned. I guess this is the cost of being new to boating and not having someone show you everything around the engine that needs regular service.

Thanks for all the help.

How is it running now?
Are you back up to top speed?
