Have a tracker 175 pro with a mercury 25hp 4 stroke........has a hard time getting on plane...using in lake that has a 25hp limit on motors..........question:

what can I do to get boat on plane......and maybe more power.......boat runs about 18-19mph with me in boat and 1/2 tank gas....with 2 runs about 14mph

1. would a hydrofoil help?...(get on plane...maybe I could gain couple of mph)?

2. different prop?

3. modify engine?

4. other suggestions

thanks,

Re: Boat not quite getting on plane

Hi Slackdog, first tell the experts here (not me) whether you have a tach or not and if you do how many RPMs are you turning at full throttle (WOT)? Is a Tracker 175 pro a 17 footer? What kind of prop is on there now?

You've come to the right place, just give up some more info and you'll be in good shape soon enough!

Thats a fairly big boat to be pushing with a 25 HP engine. Without knowing current prop pitch and WOT RPM we can't give you very sound advice. That said, it appears load distribution (more weight up front), trying different trim settings, and a prop with less pitch may all help.

25 bigfoot? Note the gear ratio on these guys is tall. If I recall correctly it is 2:38

Re: Boat not quite getting on plane

If you are running 14 to 19 mph, then you are running on plane. Why do you think your boat is not planing at those speeds? It sound like you really want more top-end speed. Correct?

Transition to plane is typically 6 to 11 mph depending on the style of the planing hull.

Hydrofoils are helpful on under powered boats. They increase the planing surface of the boat and can help get on plane quicker. They rarely increase top-end speed (typically too much drag and too much downforce on the bow).

Adjusting the weight distribution can help some if you are not planing quickly.

Overall, I wouldn't expect the 25hp engine to push you much faster.

The prop is a Mercurty Black Max 3 blade....diameter is 10-7/8...pitch= 11...aluminum........

I do have a Tach.........with throttle max out.....runs around close to max on tachometer....around 6800-7000

slackdog

Yikes -- 6800 - 7000 is reving about 800 - 1000 RPM too high. Max RPM is 6000. Or the tach is not calibrated properly. The prop calculator at those RPM shows over 35% slip @ 19 MPH so something is not right. 25 BigFoot gearing is 2.42:1. Seems like a 13 pitch would be a better choice. It probably won't increase speed much and theoretically would make hole shot even worse, but it would get engine RPM back in line. I think one needs to look at setup as well. Make sure the AV plate is even or slightly above the keel. Verify tach calibration. Check weight distribution, and check speed with known accurate speedo or GPS. Then think about props.

Re: Boat not quite getting on plane

A 25 should be able to plane out with close to 1500 lbs assuming you have everything setup right. I doubt that you have that much weight, so a 25 should work although it won't blow fins off the fish. It might be worth trying a whale tail, with a 12 or 13. Try to lighten up as much as you can and balance the load. Make sure you have some weight in front which will make the plane a bit less of a chore. If this still does not work, you are not going to like the answer.

Wanted to make sure this was a bigfoot before sharing a similar situation. My friend has an older Bluefin 16 footer with the same motor. He did some mods like added some decking and a livewell. Boat is not that wide, but it is fairly heavy for a 16 footer. The performance numbers are almost identical to what you reported. 18 MPH with 1 person, and 14 with 2 people. Boat planes, but it just won't go fast. He also has a 10 pitch prop. He did try a 11 and 12, but they did not help at all.

I don't know this for a fact, but I wonder if the bigfoot is just a bad fit for a regular vhull boat. Higher gear ratio means you need more RPMS to get the same speed as a typical motor at 2:08 gear ratio or jump up on the prop pitch to achieve the same speed. A standard 25 would likely run 11 or 12 pitch, so you would need to jump up 2 to get the same speed. The question then is will it plane with a 13 or 14? My guess is maybe with the 13, but probably not with the 14. The motor is billed as high thrust and when you think about it, a pontoon is well suited for this type of motor. 18 MPH on a pontoon with a 25 would make most people happy.

It would be helpfull to know if anybody else gets more speed from the bigfoot 25. One dealer I talked to out of Wisconson says they recommend the bigfoot for 16 footers because they don't cavitate, and can push a boat meant for a bigger motor at a reasonable speed. They apparently have the 25 limit on some lakes as well. I don't really agree with this because I fish restricted lakes and see a variety of 25s pushing 14 and 16 foot boats with various configurations and load factors. They all move well beyond 18 MPH. The last few times out I was running a 14 foot alumicraft with a 2004 15 Johnson. This would do 19 MPH and jump on plane real quick. I was not able to keep up with the 25s on the lake, but was close to some of them with 3 people.

My new boat is 15' weighs 615 lbs and will do 29 mph in good conditions with a 12 pitch and a honda 25. It is a little slow on the hole shot, but easily gets max rpm range. I don't have numbers for 2 and 3 people yet, but I believe it will knock me down to around 22 mph with 3 people.

Good luck on solving this. Hopefully you don't have to loose the cooler to where you are going.

Put a correct prop on it.

A hydrofoil would help, Smart Tabs would help a lot more.

Re: Boat not quite getting on plane

40 and 50 HP Johnson/Evinrudes have had 2.42:1 gears for years and typically run 15 pitch props. Depending on the hull, a 17 or 19 is used. Deep gears allow use of a prop with more pitch. End result is the same as low pitch with higher prop speed. The new Evinrude e-tec two cylinder engines run 2.6x:1 gears but the props look like canoe paddles.
