Boat or Kaboat

Definitely getting an inflatable before spring. Main use will be fishing the bow river carrying myself, wife, and 4yr old. Will occasionally use it on small lakes. I have a 55# minn Kota and in the next couple years will pick up a 5-10hp outboard. I really like the 16' Saturn kaboat. However I have an opportunity to pick up a salter s320 for quite a bit cheaper. What would you do??

Don't know what a salter s320 is, but if its a regular boat, get that. Not a kaboat fan. It would make a horrible fishing boat.

It is just a regular boat. I like the kaboat for the lighter weight and less resistance in the water. Is it the stability that you don't like? I also could get a 12' Z Ray at a good price but they are quite heavy and are Chinese PVC, so I'm shying away from that idea.

The first time you put the fam and fishing gear in that kaboat you'd curse Saturn with every fiber of your being.

Thanks guys. Definately appreciate the responses. Is the 11' regular boat going to be big enough for the 3 of us for fishing? I mean me fishing and my wife or son holding a fishing rod.

Should be. If you can swing it you might consider the next size up, but if you're looking at a really good price on that eleven footer I think it would work fine for you.

Plainly in agreement with Inccop, you are looking at 11" sibs with inflatable floors, Saturn has a new 11" extra wide model perfect for fishing also with inflatable floor, check, a good fishing alternative to the standard 11" and just $ 80 more...

Thanks guys. I bought the Salter 11' today. I still like the concept of the kaboat but without a dealer in town so I could physically see the boat and not knowing anyone with one I decided it wasn't worth the chance. Can't wait to get in the water!

Not sure what your experience with kaboats are? I have an Sk396 and an SK487. The 12ft is a heck of a little boat that I bought for fishing narrow calm rivers around my area. After seeing the video of the guy in Finland, doing an excursion with the SK487, I had to have one. The thing is super heavy duty and really scoots around with a 5hp Mercury. Its plenty stable for a narrow boat with no drag that can handle just about anything you throw at it. See for yourself: with SK487 at Kymijoki rapids - YouTube

I have to say,

I'm a fan of the kaboat s too! They are not for everyone but you cannot deny the neat design and price point of these inflatables. As an owner of a "narrow" boat I recognize that they serve a special niche amongst the boating community. Looks really cool to me and I'm considering buying a 15' or 16' model to scoot around for camping and fishing.

I know a couple of iboaters have Saturn boats and are very happy with them, and I have nothing against Saturn. However, I'm active on three message boards, and on every one of them without exception when a negative comment is made about a Saturn product a "satisfied customer" inevitably materializes to sing its praises and take umbrage, and it's always a brand new poster. Things that make ya say hmmmmmm.

I own the 14ft kaboat. I have had it about 8 months now. It is nice for rivers but garbage for lakes. The 16 ft kaboat is a little wider than the 14 kaboat. 40 inches vs 50 inches and 3 inch Larger tubes on the 16 kaboat. I'm looking at a 12 ft achilles now for bigger water. I have a glass river only 3 miles from my house so im keeping the kaboat. I think it will be nice having my choice of a small kaboat or a larger SIB to choose from depending where I go.

It all depends on what you need the boat for. The Kaboat is a bit narrow but better for other things. A wider boat would be more user friendly but always heavier to deal with.

I'm leaning to a kaboat because is suits my hobbies. I do a mix of fishing, camping and joy riding/exploring. I need a portable and light boat to haul and unpack so the Kaboat fits.

I got a 12ft kaboat on Craigslist and it's perfect for me and my son to get off the bank for very little $$. This forum is great and I see myself getting a bigger boat and outboard when kid #2 gets bigger.

Ive been browsing on here reading about the Saturn Kaboats and such as I want one to do some fishing on. I had thought this would be the perfect compromise between a kayak and a regular boat/canoe - figured it would get me in the holes I want without too much size/weight holding me down.

Let me know your thoughts please.
