I have a 16' fiberglass bass boat that needs the carpet replaced it is set up like a tracker pan fish(stick steer in front) and was wondering if I took the old carpet out and sanded down the old glue if It would be ok to just to use non skid paint or spray on bed liner. I can't afford to have someone put in new carpet and I'm not good at that kind of stuff but good with paint. Has any one here done it and how does it last

Check out my topic a little further down the page called Non-Skid Tape. There is some good discussion on this there. I checked into a lot of different options. Cost is my #1 concern. Getting a good marine carpet from Lowes is just as cost effective as anything that you can roll on. Seems better on bare feet too!. I've got mine stripped out, and will be installing the new stuff after some other projects. Got to fill up the long winter here!

There are many good places to get boat carpet.
Iboats is a good start. You can get a limited color and weight selection at Lowes and Home Depot. I got mine at www.bassboatcarpets.com and it came with a very handy and informative installation manual and carpet knives. They will answer any question regarding installation over the phone. It isn't rocket science or the Cistine Chapel ceiling, go for it, its just elbow grease.

Well it was a balmy 20*f here today so i got started on the boat carpet redo. pulled all the old stuff out and started scraping the adhesive and backer off comes off pretty good so far. I removed the rod locker and live well covers (they leaked anyway). I have decided to go with paint on the sides and still not sure about the floor. I'm leaning towards the tuff coat non skid coating from cabala's or similar or an epoxy for the floor. I also have to redo some more wiring that i started to do last year and need to relocate my aux. battery(too much weight on 1 side)and i'm not sure where to put it yet. I also need to mount my new finder somewhere too. oh well hope we get back to normal weather soon so I don't have to bundle up to work on it. Bare feet are not a concern for me we don't tube or ski with this boat.

well I have been working on the boat when the weather has been decent and got it ready for paint. I used rattle cans for the sides and got the first coat of skid no more on the floor. Its supposed to be nice out tomorrow again and I am going to put down a second coat on the floor.not sure on my color choice for the sides will sleep on it.

Re: boat painting update with pics

well its was about 75 here today and I decided the silver wasn't going to work so I went over it with white.(sure wish i had a garage)I need to some spots again and the floor needs some spots covered again.
the skid no more is kind of like a spray on bed liner when it dries. I think it would go on better with a roller or spray gun. We will see how it holds up over time.
I also got the controls mounted back up and the transducer and speed sensor mounted. next to decide how to mount the head unit.

If you look close, you can see the "stick steer" in the front, 5th image. Likewise the throttle controls can be seen up front in another image. Quite an interesting arrangement, situated so far forwards.

..... it is set up like a tracker pan fish (stick steer in front)

Re: boat painting update with pics

I got tired of working on the new camper and it was nice today and I took her to the lake to try out the new finder and some other things(clear my head). found out she will do a whoppin 26 mph.
The skid no more went on alot better than I thought it would when I first started putting it down. I thought what the heck did I buy it looked like crap. let it dry and put the second coat on and it turned out pretty good smoothed right out and is really skid resistant.I put some on top of my rod locker cover and livewell covers because the kids step on them getting in and out then painted over it and it is still skid resistant. I also put some on the top sides of my trailer because I have to walk down the trailer and hop in when launching/loading and with wet Nikes today I didn't slip into the 57 degree water like I did last year. the way I applied it was pour some out and take a brush and spread it out. I found if you go one direction it worked better. this summer I might give her another coat of white paint but its fine for now.(dont have time for 2 projects at same time)
Yup its an old stick steer (pretty much rules out anything but cruising and fishing) I had thoughts of making a center console out of it but thought better of it cause its kind of narrow. and this way I always have the front seat :D

What a difference from the first pics! That really looks good.

Nice job! But I am surprised that with a 50 hp it will only do 26 mph??? That boat doesn't look very heavy. What size prop is on it?

Looking at the pictures I have... uncontrollable urge.... to polish.... gel coat... AAAAGGHHHH! :D

I may not have the speed sensor adjusted correctly, will have to read up on it. I am not sure what prop it has I think I can get my boss to take his gps out with me and tell me for sure.
