Hey guys, this is my first post as I am finally out on my own. I am looking to get a new 2010 Bayliner 185, sport seating, with the 4.3L V6. The dealer's manager has given me a price of $20,495. This is prior to any negotiations. The boat has been there as far as I know over a month maybe 2 and they seem motivated to sell it. The manager even called me after not talking to me a few days and took $1500 off the boat to get it down to the $20,495.

How should I approach negotiations on the price? What is a good starting point on the price negotiations? Is it too much to start out at an offer of $18,000?? What is the general rule of thumb when negotiating boat prices?

Thanks for any help you all can offer!!!

Also I am in Tennessee if that makes a difference on the approach I take...

Re: Boat Price/Negotiation HELP

Knowledge is power when you negotiate for anything.

Get the MSRP. Get an estimate of the invoice online (google, etc). Call dealers in other cities with similar boats and get their best price. Get the NADA price of a 1 year old same make/model of boat. Download reviews. Buy boating magazines.

Go through it several times so you have an idea of where everything stands, and take it all with you when you go back. If they have desks, make a big show of it as you set it on the desks.

Make a realistic offer based on the information you've gathered about 1000-750 lower than what you want to pay. Don't be rude, don't be pompus, just be honest. Say this is the price you are willing to pay based on ALL THIS INFORMATION and calling other dealers.

If you have the information, a good negotiator needs only a few hundred to hit their price.

Goodluck!!
