:D i thought that was a funny way to put it man...

along with a boating class put on by the us coast guard aux. or the united states power squadron. a really good book to get ya hip to anything, including the lingo is, chapman piloting, seamanship and boat handling. it's a real thick expensive book, but it surely has just about anything you can think of that's boat related in it... maybe check out your local library if ya don't want to part with the bread...

Welcome Aboard....

Don't worry so much as sounding smart...BE SMART and take a safe boating class...Do you actually own a boat? Meanwhile here is some reading on nautical terminoligy

http://www.marinewaypoints.com/learn/glossary/glossary.shtml

yes, I do own a boat. my first one to be exact. it's a 1965 Johnson tri-hull with a Johnson 100 V4. the reason I only know transom and stringer is that I need to fix them before I hit the water.:(

Obviously you have a computer for this posting. With that in mind why would you ask a question here when a simple Google search would be able to answer these questions you asked so far. Also faster and at your pace, as deep as you are ready to go-----with pictures.

Why would you ask about a boat on iboats?????

Because it is the greatest concentration of boat geeks in the known world!

I hate google, follow 50 dead links to still not find out what you want to know.

Yes there are certain places you need a liceanse to operate a boat, as it should be.

I build boats and an easy way to remember port/Starboard is, port and left both have 4 letters.

Re: boat terminology?

To get you started with your boat education here are answers to the questions nobody bothered to answer:

Keel: The structural member that runs from the bow of the boat, down the center to the transom. It is the backbone of your boat.

Starboard: This is the right side of the boat as you face forward. When someone says turn to starboard you turn right. Dumb huh?

Port: This can have two meanings. On a boat it is the left side of the boat as you face forward. When someone says turn to port, you turn left. Also dumb huh. You can remember port from starboard as left and port both have four letters. Port is also the name for a destination or your home port. Return to port means to go home. Confused yet?

Beam: Width of the boat.

Then there are chines, garboard plugs, helms, stanchions, and a gazillion other rediculous terms. By the way -- B-O-A-T stands for break out another thousand (as in dollars). Have fun, boat safely, and by all means get educated in three categories 1) your boat, 2) navigation, and 3) safety

start prowling the local used book stores for a copy of "Chapmans Piloting" it has lots of stuff the you need to know, lots of stuff that's just interesting, and lots of stuff that other boaters need but you'll never use.
and read the post's in stupid human tricks to learn what not to do.

I hope you don't think I'm being too picky here Silvertip, but the keel runs from the stem to the transom (if the boat has a transom, not all do).

A boat has two bows (port & starboard), they are the curved surfaces of the hull that meet at the stem.

I guess that's why Google isn't much of a success, right?
