i currently have a '17 bass tracker w/ 50 hp motor. pretty good condition for its age. i have everything checked and am fond of it. boat and motor are '86. i fish in lower laguna madre and most of the bay is on average around 2-3 ft. i saw a flats boat on craigslist and have been exchanging emails with the owner who is looking for a boat like mine. his is an '87 '18 ft. flats boat w/ 150 hp Mercury. My motor is a Mercury as well. He hasn't run his boat in 8 months but from one fishman to another-nothing is wrong-maybe just needed a tune-up. i did a research and he has a website that he does guide fishing. which makes me feel more comfortable because i know how i feel about my belongings. it seems like an even trade would benefit both of us but i guess i am looking for an outside view. he offered to hold onto my papers for a limited time for me to have everything checked. does this sound too good to be true?

If he does guide fishing wouldn't he have a bunch of hours on the boat and motor?

Re: boat trade questions

that i thought of at first. but on his site it has a lot of pics of fishing in a lake or something. the pics of the boat are not the one that we are considering swapping. he told me everything was completely rebuild motor and boat in 99 professionally.

Re: boat trade questions

in any trade situation.......

after careful inspection of the product...a dollar value is placed on the products......

that gives you a common point or reference to judge from....

and 9 years is a lot of time on a commercial situation....car rental companys dump their old stock on two years.....

after you do a marine inspection on the hull...checking for rot (among other things....) a compression check on the motor would be paramount.....

if you cant do it..pay someone....better out 200 than 2000.

Re: boat trade questions

Those older boats are both worth not too much more than whatever the engines are worth, IMO. So you'll have to evaluate his motor vs. yours - understanding the 150 is worth a lot more if equal condition.

Heck, if his boat and engine is OK, why not make the swap if it fits you better? Just make sure it runs well!
