Re: Boat Wiring

I got you beat SuzukiChopper. I bought my boat on e-bay (my first Internet buy ever). Since then I have done a total restore and about 80% came from the Internet (lots from e-bay). For that matter I almost named it "On-line" but most of the wire in it came from Home Depot.

Oh oh, you shouldn't of told me you got yours off e-bay. Now my ol' lady is going to kill me because now that I know you can successfully buy a boat off e-bay, well let the hunt begin!! :) I know WAY too many people that won't do any kind of business online because of the security risks and what-not, but if you're careful with what you do and who you deal with, well it's the same as walking into a store and possibly being pick pocketed.

I'm almost thinking of starting a thread so that everyone that has purchased stuff on-line for their boat, pleasure, re-build or otherwise, can post links to the sites and reputable people to purchase from on e-bay. Yes no?

Re: Boat Wiring

Good idea on the site, SC. There's nothing wrong with buying on ebay. I've bought one boat on there, and it turned out wonderfully. I wouldn't purchase a boat that was "used, but in brand new condition", though. You buy things on ebay, usually sight unseen. Just assume that you're going to be in to do a lot of work like any other boat. I only bargain shop for boats there, and that means restoration buying. Just to keep things in perspective. Thanks to everyone who put in links. Handy sites to know.

Re: Boat Wiring

Like said “you have to be careful.” When I bought mine I figured that I would have to replace everything (all wood, interior, motor, etc). I wrecked my last boat on a submerged log or barrel or something in about 30 feet of water doing about 45mph. I got it back to the ramp but there was to much damage to the hull. So when I got on e-bay I was just looking for a hull. I wanted to take everything from my old boat and install it in the new one. Well it didn't work out that way. I pretty much had to sell off or give away what I had and start over. Today I will say it was worth it. When I was doing it I wanted to throw a flair into its gas tank and burn it to the trailer. Without e-bay it would have been impossible to find the parts that were missing. But then again I would not have the boat if it was not for e-bay. So I guess you can say I have a love/hate relationship. There is mostly good folks there just trying to get rid of the stuff they don't want anymore but as you all know all it takes is a couple bad apples......Imho I wouldn't buy the Hope Diamond on there but there is a lot of good stuff at good prices. You just have to do your homework (that what feedback is for or if possible go look at it if cost effective) or sometimes take a risk that it is what they say it is. There is always “outs” also. You can send it back or get e-bay involved (there dispute department). One way or another it will get fixed. It just may take some time and a few e-mails.
As for a link or post about e-bay. The MOD’s here have let most single links float past if they are pertaining to the posters topic but remember this board is sponsored by “i boats--mega mall”. I don't think they would take well to the competition on there site. Don't let them fool ya. They are here to make money to. Cost a lot to keep a site like this one up and you don't see any advertising or pop ups do you??? Just iboats. Which is just fine with me.

PS When I went to pick my boat up from the guy (I bought mine site unseen) it was in such good shape (the hull) I felt like I stole it from him. I used the “take a chance” method that time. The seller was new (little history) and like I said before it was my first internet buy back in 2000 but after it worked out so well I was hooked. The seller http://usauctions.com/ has now sold thousands of boats on e-bay with very little bad feed back and all (2 I think in the last year) were solved. I don't work for them but I do check them out time to time looking for a project.

Re: Boat Wiring

Just so this thread didn't get too highjacked, I posted a new thread with links. The first link in my list was iboats.com but when it comes to stuff like fiberglass and resins, well there is no selection there. I'm going to edit my post to say that it is for links for stuff you can't find on iboats.

I was going to keep this one a secret, but if you are looking for a project boat, go here:

http://www.salvagedirect.com/

another good place but you only have so much time to pay and pick up before they charge you storage fees.
