Re: Boating Class

I have taken the USCG, the Power Squadron, the Boy Scout (Marlin Spike) and Florida's online course. I am currently taking an online Captain's course. I believe in being prepared for what's going to hit you. I have learned a lot from all of them, but I am dismayed that Dive Flag laws are not given enough emphasis. I have had my float, buzzed, yanked, cut free and disregarded. Its not a slalom buoy!

All I can say is: Any training is good training. As an academy instructor used to say, You will not rise to the occasion, you will sink to the level of your training.

The problem with boating while intoxicated or impaired is similar to DWI. Yes you can get summoned and fined for doing either after having a few. The real problem arises when there is an accident. If you were operating while under the influence then an accident involving personal injury becomes a veihcular assault, and if there was a death, you are looking at some form of homicide charge (as much as 5-15 years in state prison in NY).

BTW Power Squadron courses are excellant. See http://www.usps.org/e_stuff/public_ed.htm for a course near you.

Re: Boating Class

To my knowledge, possesion and transportation of firearms on a vessel (CCW or otherwise) is dictated by the state jurisdiction for the body of water the vessel is operating on. I did some digging on CG regulations and couldn't find any. Typically the boating courses address the specific regulations of the state where the boating class and cert is being issued. I suspect that the firearms discussion was specific to that states regulations.

I was going mention this before I saw that you did.

You really have to understand that just because someone says such and such a thing relating to guns is illegal for them, it doesn't mean its that way for everybody.
Regarding handguns anway, case in point, here in VT, you can't carry in a govt building, or a school. Thats pretty much it. You can carry anywhere else, concealed or not, and there are no permits. Its the 2A the way it was meant to be.

The problem for me, is that I enjoy crossing Lake Champlain to the NY side to camp on Valcour Island on the houseboat that is my permanent residence. NY has no reciprocity for out of state permits, and being from VT, there are no permits to try to carry over anyway.

Can't leave the gun at home, because home is traveling with me across the state line. Am I supposed to leave it unattended in the truck back on shore? That doesn't seem like a very smart solution...

But I digress... this thread isn't about carry, its about boating courses. Sorry for the hijack...
