Boats and rain...

So I'm almost embarrassed to post this question, but I saw someone else post something similar and it got me thinking.

I have had for the past month my old 1970s tri hull (no carpet, fiberglass only) boat sitting out at the mechanics shop with a 50 hp outboard Johnson. Plus is unplugged of course, so question is. Could the outboard get damaged from rain sitting out? Anything inside the boat? I can't really think of how this would hurt it.

Thanks

Don't know how your weather has been but the sun can cook vinyl seats in a hurry.

The direct sun will damage the boat & engine more than the rain. i.e. It's a boat...it's meant to be in "damp" environment. Sun wil dry/crack/shrink vinyl, fade/crack paint. "Wet" will hurt if boat doesn't have a good chance to dry out once in a while: mold, mildew etc. Also if left uncovered for long periods, you may have some avian friends "drop-in" or more than likely "drop on" you.

Drop by any boat dealer's lot and you will see lots of brand new, multi-thousand $$$ boats & motors sitting out in the weather. Do you think they would be exposing all that money if it were going to damage it? Now, having said that bit of foolishness, of course over the long haul, (years) yes the elements certainly will take their toll. The sun will even destroy your hide. I should know, I just had four skin cancers removed from my nicely tanned arms.

I would be more interested in why your mechanic has had it for a MONTH..

Or is this one of those work on at your leisure for a discount jobs...

Well I learned the hard way but its a long story. When I leave my boat outside I tip it up as high as I can get it so all the water runs out the drain hole. (Very important to remove the plug LOL) Now with it tipped like that I have to tilt the motor, I have a Force and the Vent / Handle on the hood acts like a funnel and will fill up the compartment. ( Thier is no drain hole in the front thier is one at the rear when the engine is not tipped) So I put a bag over the hood when it is tipped.

Drill bits make good drain holes.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. As long as you aren't expecting any hail storms anytime soon you should be fine.

I cover my all-alloy boat to (mainly) keep the UV out. Occasionally after a weekend on the bay, I'll uncover it when it's raining to let the fresh water flush out the salt! Then I let it air dry, spray anti-mould and insecticide into the cuddy and recover. A controlled amount of rain is your boat's friend! :D
