Body parts found in the

bird bath. Twice now this week I've discovered parts of dead birds in the bird bath in our yard. First it was a head and then yesterday a wing and parts of a leg. Rather bizarre. We've had this bird bath for 7 years and have never seen this before. My son thought he saw a raven carrying something, maybe.

I'm thinking maybe a cat is taking advantage of the unsuspecting birds, but maybe it is some murderous bird. Any thoughts on what might be responsible for this carnage?

Probably a cat, but it could be a Cooper's Hawk or some other raptor?

Cats don't normally decapitate it's prey. They usaully bring it back to there master as to say look what i got for you.

My vote is for a raptor, probably a falcon. Though the behavior is cat like, they don't carry prey to water.

Are there any treebranches above the birdbath?? Owls (at night) and hawks are sometimes sloppy eaters and drop stuff. Raccons are fond of washing there food before they eat it also. I saw an Owl cough up a hairball one day, while hunting, and went to look at it. I was suprised to see some pieces of a big crayfish's shell w the fur and bones, and wondered how it caught a Crayfish in the dark???

I've seen a Kestrel leave some body parts under his branch near my deck, I guess if I put a bird bath under him, the parts would land there.

You are all off track. Your bird bath has now been claimed by a group of Mafia based feathered terrorists. They have obviously designated the bathing area as a 'drop point' for the poor creatures who have crossed the line and had to be dealt with and are served as a lesson to others who dare cross the line. Simply pay the required vig and no one else needs to get hurt. Capiche?

Peregrine Falcons are common around here and attack other birds/rodents like high performance killer's. They are probably stopping to eat and wash up after the carnage.

A feline hunter is more likely to munch on their prize on ground level.

OR

It could be one of those swimming Cougars!!!

i've seen my cat hanging out in the bird bath. though i can't see it eating it's prey up there. i too think they like to feast at ground level.

not normally, but i had one when i grew up that loved to eat only the head. the rest he'd deposit on the door step. headless mice, shrews, chipmunks etc. he was very consistent about doing this, much to my mothers disgust..

Maybe your neighbor got half a load on and thought the birdbath was his barbecue

Pretty sure its not a cat. Can`t see them eating or leaving parts behind in the birdbath. Have noticed a pair of crows have taken up residence in the area and saw one snatch a young robin off the ground yesterday and carry it away. Didn`t realize they were predators.

Crows often take young birds.

My vote is a crow or raven. I actually saw a crow the other day wash a bug in a puddle of water before it ate it. Theres a reason they call them a murder of crows. They will eat carion and I wouldnt be suprised if they would actually kill to eat if its easy prey.
