bolt torque

i have a 1974 (may be '76)johnson 115 outboard that i got a new cylinder head for a few weeks ago. i was just wondering the torque settings to attach the head to the engine and that little plate with about a million bolts in it that goes on top of the head. if you need any more info just ask. thanks!

A manual is a great idea.I think the head bolts are 14-18 and the water cover bolts 5 -7.But even after doing them all these years,I pull my manual to be sure my guess is correct.Then I do the job.Also manuals will show you which bolts to tighten,in which order.<br /><br />DHP

When working with any torgue pattern, The general rule is to work from the center going out. On outboard engines, the best torgue wrench to use is measured in in/lbs. A ft/lbs is not sensitive enough to measure the small torgue value's such as by-pass covers, Etc. These will be 1/20, 5'l6 bolt's. A ft/lbs. wrench will result in . stripped threads. You need a Ft/lbs. wrench, only on the flywheel. Some may argue using a ft/lbs. wrench on the connecting rod bolt's. I don't! I use a snap-on dial torgue wrench going up to 500 in/lbs.

R. <br /><br />I completly agree with you,and hope you see why I didn't say as a general rule.That is why I refer to the manual.<br /><br />DHP<br /><br />and NO you don't measure 14 ft lbs with a meter that goes up to 250 ft lbs.I didn't think far enough ahead to say that.But I do have a torque wrench that goes to 50 ft lb.

Torqu values are 216-240 inch pounds for the heads, 60-80 inch pounds for the covers
