I misplaced or tossed the bolts for the t-stat cover on a 1987 50 hp Evinrude. Can I go to the hardware store and buy some bolts or do I need to get them from Evinrude. If I remember correctly the bolts have a shoulder on them.

Thanks for the help.

Pick up some stainless ones and use a washer on them with some locktite. 1/4-20 I believe....

BLUE Loctite...(if needed...I don't see a reason for it). If you use Red Loctite, you will NEVER get them apart again without damage. All bolts have shoulders after a certain amount of thread, unless its special all thread bolt, and I really doubt thats some special bolt...and I don't think you need stainless either. Call an Evinrude dealer and ask.
My T-Stat covers on most of my motors are simple 1/4-20 bolts, any Hardware store, and coated with Blue RTV SEALENT, not any Loctite....for what its worth

Thanks for straightening me out. I thought they might back out unless something was applied. Blue, of course. I didn't look to see where he was located, so I thought perhaps he may be using it in saltwater, thus the suggestion to get stainless. Yeah, call the dealer and ask....

Re: Bolts for t-stat cover

Actually (i gotta go by memory here, boat in the slip) I'm in salt water on my 125 OB, and I think the bolts just go into the block, but if they DID go to a water jacket, I would probably go stainless. In fact mine might be stainless. Just can't remember (4 boats, 6 motors, can't even remember my name lately). But the Blue RTV should protect any bolt long enough to get the correct info from a dealer.
Now that I think of it, I think they DO go into the water jacket, T-Stat gasket goes around the bolt. I'll have to take a magnet with me next time out and check for SS bolts.
