I wanted to know if you can use car bondo over a epoxy repair . I want to use it to fill small pin holes and some minor inperfections in the surface . I will be using a epoxy 2 part primer over the repair and it is not below the water line . Thank for the input JJB

Re: Bondo over epoxy ?

I know people on the forum say never to use Bondo on your boat, and I respect their opinion. However, I have spoken both to the techs at Bondo and at the makers of Marinetex, and both said that it would be ok to use Bondo on boats as long as you cover with another filler or paint.

Now, if you were making a major repair then that is a different story. For what you are using it for then I think it would be ok. Small quarter sized holes are nothing as long as you are covering the Bondo with another filler or painting over it at least 3 passes.

The problem is it won't stick to the epoxy very well, so even if it's in an area where it could be used, it will likely fail due to the poor bond.
I agree, while Bondo is not the best product out there for marine use, it can be used succesfully on boats.

Ive used bondo a lot. I bondo glassed my whole floor and repaired parts of my splashwell. The only thing that sucks about it is that you get hardly any time to wet out the fiberglass and the cloth or mat. It has hardly any working time. Around here there is no other option unless i order something on the net. I glassed my whole floor in with it and a lot of other things. I like it its pricy but i have been doing my restoration at my own pace and wal-mart here stocks it and its always available. I know that most dont like it but im planing on using it for whatever i need to fiberglass.

There's several kinds of bondo. If you use the type with fiberglass filler (instead of gypsum) it's fine to use with boats.

You won't get a very good bond with the epoxy though. Bondo uses polyester resin. You'll have to score up the epoxy to get even a moderate mechanical bond.

A good bondo such as Rage Gold is designed for auto restoration and a well sanded 80 grit epoxy is the way to apply bodo over it. with metals it actually creates better adhesion/ I work at the nations biggest Lamborghini Miura Restoration shop. ( Bobileff Motor Cars ) . Im ASE , ICAR, PPG, Dupont , Basf certified so im not a backyard bodyman
thanks For all the Info Ive gotten off here in the resto of my 73 imp. Its been awesome

Why don't you just use epoxy mixed with a thickener, fill the holes, sand and then paint? I think cabosil is OK with epoxy. Let some of the epoxy experts answer.

Have a great day,

Rob.
