I went out today to run a boat I just got. It is a 1992 ski centurion and has the borg warner transmission. After cruising out of the harbor and running around for a bit we wanted to stop and swim but the boat wouldn't go back into neutral. Went to put it in reverse and it still goes forward. The boat is in forward gear at all times even when the neutral button is pulled out or pushed in. What could this be? Please help!

:welcome: to iboats

My first guess is the cable broke or cable end came off the lever. Your borg warner is listed most often as a velvet drive. Look on the side of the transmission and see if the cable is moving the shift lever on the tranny

Here is what your looking for

That was the first thing I check. The arm and cable.are hooked up. The boat stays in forward gear at all times. Even when I have the neutral button up front by the throttle it is still engaged. I can give it gas in forward and reverse and the boat won't budge

Yes sir. Everything is moving like it should. It's like it won't disengage itself at all.

Check the fluid level and let us know what the model is. There should be a tag on the transmission. The neutral button disengages the throttle lever from the shift cable.

The model number is 10-17-202. Fluid level looked good

That model is a 1:1 direct drive, and I'm sorry to say the trans is going to need to be rebuilt/replaced. The good thing about the velvet drive is when it fails it locks it self in forward so you can get home. The drive is pretty simple and it doesn't take a lot to rebuilt one.

Do you know how much a rebuilt kit for it goes for or a good place to get one from?

Should be real easy to find. I googled and came up with this one on ebay and $150

Keep in mind that you have a 10-17 series transmission, but make sure to get all the info off the tag and verify the numbers. There are 5000 series (older models) and the new ones from are 70C, 71C and 72C series. The one in the ebay link is for the 7* series and there are others which can range around $500 (master kits include pump). You want to take the trans apart and see what kind of parts need replacing.

How do you figure out if it is a 70c 71c 72c or 5000 series?
