Botanist Needed

I was cutting my grass this evening and I say a lone plant on my hillside. I am in the woods alot and have a great deal of time looking at plants in the woods and fields. This one has me stumped. It is the only one I found. Very rich violet/purple color. Anyone a Botanist ?? The individual purple bud flowers? appear to be 3/4 to 1 inch long and the leaves seem to have purple lines in them.

My wife says its part of the gentian plant family ,so she thinks.You know shes one of those self proclamed plant
experts.If you saw her gardens you might think so too.

Your wife is correct...it's a soapwort gentian...

Thank you! The mystery of it's name is solved. It is the first I had seen and the onle one on my hillside.

It is also used as a bittering agent in alcoholic drinks.
