I would like to know what bottom paint is best for a 25mph power boat. I have recently bought a 30 ft. sea ray and it has a modified epoxy paint on the bottom. I have used ablative paints on sail boats and really like the idea of not having a build up of paint each year.My boat is used mainly in long island sound and is out of the water for the winter.Would the speed of the sea ray wear the ablative paint off to quickly? Any body have a recommendation as to what would be the best paint to use for my area?

Re: bottom paint

i used interlux micron csc on my 20' center console (42 mph max). only one season, but it worked great. no growth or slime whatsoever, and still a very smooth finish. signs of slight wear in areas, but never came off completely. i plan to put one thin coat on this year and enjoy another season. highly recommended.

Handball,an ablative paint is a good choice .Especially since there is a hard paint on it already. You can prepare the surface and coat the bottom with ablative. If you ever want to switch back to a hard paint ,you will have a job because you cannot put a hard paint over the ablative. You will have to remove all the soft paint.Charlie

Re: bottom paint

Thanks for the bottom paint sugestions charlie and mattttt25, I think I will try an ablative this year and see how it goes.By the way mattttt I have been to annapolis many times and usually dock at either back creek marina or at the town dock on main street. We have cruised from maine to the bahamas and I still think chessapeake bay is the very best cruising grounds on the east coast. We may take another cruise to chessapeake this summer if the gas prices are not to high.Lets keep our fingers crossed the oil companys dont get to greedy this season.

Bill D
