I have a 1988 spl and I was about 10' from the ramp and I put it in reverse to get out of the way of someone and the motor shut right off. Well come to find out when I went to look for the bow line it was under water. I lifted the motor out to find the other end of the bow rope around the prop. How ever In forward the prop doesn't turn but has play back and forth. When I try to put it in reverse it seems to bind up and not shift into gear, and the prop turn all the way around both ways. Anyone know what I need to fix to get to work again. Did I break and shear pin?

No shear pins in there Woody. Sounds like something has busted in the gear case. Mabybe stripped the splines on the prop shaft? Drain the gear lube and look for shards of metal. Let us know what you find.

So from what you are saying is one of two or maybe both, that prop rod in the lower unit and the prop gear teeth are stripped?

This is hard to change?

or the rubber bushing in the prop is slipping. the easiest fix. put in gear. with the engine off. try to turn prop. see if the inside is turning with the outside. they were built to go before the metal internal parts.

Re: Bow line around prop

I will try this, and report back tonight. Another question with this problem is that if I have it in netural and try to start the engine, there is nothing, is this a saftey item so I do not blow up engine? I have also tried to get the diagrams from evinrude but the website seems to be down. When I get the diagram I will be better off knowing what everyone is talking about.

Re: Bow line around prop

daddy I know this. It was just giving me a "Service Unavailable" today. No biggie.

Also I checked the prop, it turns just under a 1/4 turn in forward and the rubber piece inside under the lock nut and washer turns with the prop. If I try to put it in reverse it just stays in netural.

Remove the shift cable from the shift lever at the engine and see if you can manually shift into reverse using the shift lever. Have someone rotate the prop slowly while you try to shift. Let us know what happens...BTW-What HP is your motor??

Re: Bow line around prop

Well I messed with the gear cable today, after moving it back and forth at the engine the engine went into reverse. The prop only turned like it does in forward just under a 1/4 turn. So I'm thinking it might be that the cable thats worn out along with the throttle cable too. I moved the throttle in the cc and the throttle didn't move nor did the gear cable, then the throttle in the cc bound up again like before. So its got to be the cables. Also found a spark plug wire undone fron the rubber connector today. Theres another issue. Its funny how once you have one problem they all just come out of the wood work.

Yep, that is good news. Cables are alot less expensive than gears.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to be getting a cable this weekend and pull it through. I'm glad I can just bolt them together and pull.

Re: Bow line around prop

Just a thought when installing a bow rope make it long enough so it just misses the prop. One problem eliminated.
