Bow rider with no bow rail?

My Maxum bowrider doesn't have a bow rail but does have two seats up front. From reading another thread, it seems like it may be illegal to have someone ride up there. Can anyone point me to a website that would clear this up for me?

Thanks.

Re: Bow rider with no bow rail?

I just looked at the NJ Boating manual and it doesn't look like that there are any laws specific to riding in the bow without a bow rail.

I suggest you go to the following page http://www.state.nj.us/njsp/maritime/msb-location.html about a half way down is a link to send an email to answer boating rule questions.

In Washington State there is a law (Although I have not seen it in the RCW, Revised Code of Washinton) about no bow-riding and it is stated in the boating course manual as follows:

"Sitting on the gunwale, bows, seatbacks, or any other area not designed for seatings is risky behavior and can result in falling overboard. It is illegal in many states"

I just took my safety in boating course and asked specifically about this due to a recent accident that occured here in Washington just last week. The Marine Sheriff told me that if you are sitting in the seats that is OK.

My Bayliner bowrider has handles inside, I think your Maxxum is the same. It is a good idea that your passengers hold on to it when underway. Especially in chop. It is your reponsibility as the operator to make sure everybody is safe.

Nobody rides in the bow of my boat when on plane.
