You miss the point.... Nobody is saying not to use safety chains and tie towns... We are attempting to explain that while they may be bennificial in a very minor accident that is not their purpose... They are for securing the boat in normal (including sudden or emergency) driving......

I did not miss the point. The OP actually had four of them. Winch strap over or under, Winch strap loose or tight, do I need a safety chain and were to anchor it. I expressed my view on the anchor point and that's where views become diverse. My feeling is that U-bolted winch posts are not the best point to secure the chain and that the frame offers a better anchor. That's where the "what if stuff" began. Nobody needs to do it my way. I merely offered an opinion and why I felt that way. Perhaps I could have used the "weakest link" analogy rather than implying a chain was not being used.

The safety chain also serves as a fail-safe to prevent your boat from rolling/sliding off the trailer as you go up or down the launch ramp, just in case your winch fails or you leaves the winch ratchet in the release position (ask me how I know).

That's really all I'm expecting from mine.
