Been to Catalina many times in a bow rider with no problems. But......
It can get very nasty in the afternoon. In addition to the condition of your boat, right gear etc...the most important factor is skill & experience. The fact that you're even asking is a good indication that you should not attempt the crossing. Until you get some crossings under you, you should go with other boats, an experienced captain in your boat, only in good weather, only early morning (both directions). If it kicks up just a little bit, it can get very dangerous and will probably not be fun for you or your passengers. Not to mention your fuel bill.
Bring an experienced captain with you. If he says nope, then there's your answer.
