Hello,

I had very disappointing experience with these Reeds (model 128 for Johnson 30hp).

They didn't function at all.

They were badly made, were not plane only with little stability.
They wouldn't seal the crankcase with the pistons going down.
I had basic doubt in the function and feared hte engine might fail with it.

So I didn't change the stock reeds, which are pecise, stable and very well sealing.

I gave the "Power Reeds" back to the distributor.

Regards Nordy

Hi Nordy.....sorry to hear 'bout your experience with the reeds. But I would ask, did you follow the installation instructions to the letter? This means, did you flatten the reed cage faces as the instructions require? The cage faces need to be dead flat. This requires some elbow grease and a flat surface like a sheet of glass.

Did you over torque the reed screws? Over
torqueing will distort the reeds.

Hello OBJ,

there were no installation instructions of that kind you spoke.
You know, the problem is the stock reeds of the 30hp consist of a thin round steel disk with 8 narrow reeds(tongues)spreading from the middle .
It's very hard not to say impossible to build this assembly out of thin elastic plastic.

The Boyesen reeds consist of 4 (bottom reeds) and 3 (top reeds) pieces, which have to be added together in the middle (like a puzzle).
So the reed construction is not stiff and stable enough.

Furthermore because of inaccurate taping in the middle (the 4 or 3 pieces are taped together!) they aren't flat and won't cover the holes in the reeds and the stock plate.
No good idea to change the stock reeds for them !

No compression in the crankcase, good travel !

Nordy

Oh, I forgot to say, I didn't use the bolts because I didn't want to damage the reeds when torquing it.

So I didn't test the reeds.

Nordy

That is strange nordy....I've installed a lot of the reeds and havn't had a lick of trouble. But I suppose it can happen. If the engine is running good for ya'....stick with the stock reeds.

Re: Boyesen Reeds - bad quality

I wonder Boyesen had ever tested the model
128-reeds.

I contacted Boyesen and told them about the trouble.

The reaction: You have a 30-days
money-back-guarantee, send them back. That was all.

As if this could solve the problems.
I'm sure it's not an individual problem of my reeds but a basic one of the model 128.

The reeds for the 30hp are made technically bad.
First, when I unpacked them of the supermarket packing I thougt they were for the garbage, sorry to say this.

Thanks OBJ.

Nordy
Engineer with Volkswagen.

YES. IS A BIG "TROUBLE" INSTALL A SET OF BOYESEN REEDS ON SMALL OMC'S (20-30H.P.)!!!!!!!!!!!!!...,
I BOUGHT A SET , I YEAR AGO, FOR MY OMC 25 H.P.,AND TRIED TO INSTALL THAT SMALL PIECES; WAS TRIED TO PLAYED FOR 2 HOURS....., IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE!!!!.,

I OWN THE FOLLOWING ENGINES, AND ALL OF THEM WITH BOYESEN DUAL STAGE REEDS, WITH AN A+ RESULTS: MERC. V6 2.5, YAMMY 200 V2, OMC LOOPER 140 H.P. V4, MERC 25 H.P. .

THE MERC 25 H.P. HAS A SINGLE REED CAGE ( VERTICAL), THAT'S SO EASY TO INSTALL THE BOYESEN REEDS., BUT FOR OMC 20-30 h.p., KEEP YOUR STOCK METAL REEDS !!!!!!!!!!

THANKS,
DON

Thanks Don,

it would be fair towards OMC-20-30hp customers to withdraw the 128 reeds from the market.

Nordy
