Re: brake job...brakes squeal now

Applied squeal usually has nothing to do with any brake friction surface and it contact with the rotor..

It comes from where the caliper pistons make physical contact with the backing plate, for the brake pads. If there is even the slightest forward-backward vibration (often from cheaper pads), when the brakes are applied, that movement will be felt at the metal-to-metal contact, of the piston/backing plate, causing a "squeak" that is at a high enough frequency, to become a "squeal".

The sprays are only temporary "lube" to quiet the squeal. The best solution is to use somethin like CRC brake quiet, which looks like red Elmer's glue. When applied properly, it forms a barrier around the outside edge of the piston, to deaden the squeal.

Cured every one of my brake squeals in 25 years of use.

Not a pro mechanic, but I used to be a test driver for a brake pad manufacturer (when they were still made in America).

I went thru that with my wife's car years ago. Put OEM parts in and no more problem.

Agree, Use the Wagner quite stop or the Raybestos in the red box....both good pads.

'03 nissan murano
took it in for a brake job, the pedal was getting soft. it was time.

got the car back and the brakes felt alot firmer but they started squealing after warming up. they had never squealed before.

i've taken it back to the shop twice now. after the first time nothing really changed. so i took it back in. this time they said they turned the rotor, adjusted the brakes, sprayed some anti-squeal....still squealing! it's not as loud as before but it's there. same symptoms, after warming up they squeal.

what did they do wrong? what can't they fix it?

i don't really want to take it back to the same bozos but i don't really want to pay another shop to fix their work.

thanks

A "soft pedal" is NOT normal. Brake pad thickness has NOTING to do with that unless you let it go to the point of no fluid.

For the life of me, I can't understand why people will spend big $$$ to make it go faster but will "cheap out" on what makes it stop! I like to avoid hitting things. I ONLY go OEM on brakes....

If your rotors were not hand washed using soap and water, that explains your noise. It may also explain your "spongy" pedal. Most (aftermarket) rotors are packaged with a protective coating. If they don't hand wash them, it leads to your issues. Now you'll spend twice as much as an OEM job would have been.

If you had my '09 Honda you sure wouldn't! 15k out of the rear brakes then again like clockwork at 30k. Replaced with Raybestos Advanced Technology pads and rotors myself at that point. Hoping they last a good bit longer. Now the front ones have help up fine.

What happens on the Murano is the pads get thin enough so the fluid in the resevoir gets low and the pedal gets soft... This usually happens soon before the squealers are reached.. Once you compress the caliper to fit the new pads it's back to normal again... Of course bleeding new fluid in certainly wouldn't hurt in case there's condensation..

FWIW, cost less than OEM and MUCH better: http://www.r1concepts.com/nissan-murano-2003-brakes.htm

If you have a soft pedal then you have a hydraulic problem. I suspect you let the brakes go too far and the master cylinder has taken on-AIR.

As stated, I ONLY go with OEM. Only OEM meets FMVSS-135 standards.

If you plow into somebody, you'll be hard pressed to get any help from an aftermarket company that does not meet FMVSS-135. They don't-ask!

From my experience in the Murano, Armada, and Titan the pedal seems to feel soft soon after the fluid is below the 1/4 mark... In the Armada and Titan the BRAKE, VDC Off (Vehicle Dynamic Control), and ABS Lights all light up when the fluid is low like that, my Murano didn't have any lights light up and the pedal went back to normal after changing the rotors and pads. Adding more fluid to the resevoir would've been a temporary work around for the pedal softness until changing the rotors and pads but I usually change them right away instead... FWIW, as far as plowing into somebody, I haven't heard of Nissan taking responsibility for anything other than if it was proven to be a problem with the ABS Actuator, BCM (Body Control Module), or ECM (Engine Control Module) relay in the IPDM (Intelligent Power Distribution Module) and there's currently a recall out on the ECM Relay in the IPDM.
