Brand New Here...towing questions

Well brand new here to the forums and I like the look of them (very nicely set up).

I am not new to boating but will be new to being a boat owner (hopefully soon). Been shopping for about 3 months now and still looking. My main questions are centered around towing and weight for my new boat. I plan on trailering it everywhere.... I am only 1/4 mile from river for some freshwater cruising and about 45 minutes from coast of NJ for fishing so that is the max I plan on pulling the boat.

Right now I have a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport trac with an upgraded frame mounted hitch. It is a 4.0l v6 with 4wd and according to the specs on the vehicle it has a 5300 pound towing capacity. I also plan on installing a transmission cooler before I attempt any towing.

I believe the main thing I am going to have to be concerned with through my research is braking so I want to assure I do not overtax my truck to the point where it is unsafe to tow (even for a short distance)

Looking for any feedback or comments on anything I may be missing to take into consideration (like I said I am new to this) and I want to do it right (actually wish I bought a full size pickup but maybe in the near future)

I actually went to look at a boat yesterday and fell in love with it but unfortunately I think it was too much boat for me to tow. The boat was a 23' CC open bow walk around and according to NADA it has a weight of 3800# - I understand that is a dry weight and does not take into consideration gear, outboard motor, trailer, fuel etc. It had dual Mercury 135s on the back so i am assuming the weight on them is approximately 500# each (am I close?) If so, I am now at 4800# without fuel and gear and trailer. What can I expect a trailer (dual axle) of this size to weigh? Since I am sure I have to take trailer weight into consideration also.

I hated to turn down the opportunity to buy the boat (If I had the proper truck to tow it I would probably be posting a photo of it right now)

Trailer would be pushing a thousand pounds, you'd be waaaay overweight. If you are looking for a boat that is that big, you'll need a full size pickup to do the job properly and most importantly, SAFELY.

In addition to the boat, trailer, gear and gas, the weight of your passengers is also a consideration. With 4 people at 150 lb/ person that's another 600 lb. It sounds like you either need a boat under 3,000 lbs or a bigger tow vehicle.

Dual-axle trailers with a spare and a winch are 1100 lbs for boats around 23'. After about 25-26', they get up to 1200-1300 lbs.

Your boat, trailer and all boat gear cannot check in at the max towing limit unless your truck will have only one passenger and zero gear. All people and gear in the truck reduce what you can tow. People sometimes use the 80%-to-tow-limit ratio so there is room under the max for gear and people, aside from the driver, in the truck.

You are in that zone where you would be best served by a 1/2 ton truck: Ram, Silverado/Sierra, F150, Tundra, Titan or their sister SUVs: Durango, Tahoe/Yukon, Expedition, Sequoia, Armada.

The Dodge Dakota, properly equipped, would also qualify if it were a newer model. It fills the gap between the 5000 lbs guys and the 9000 lbs half-ton guys. Few do (except for less-equipped half-ton rides with base or mid-grade engines).

That boat sounds like a beauty. If you really have your heart on it, look into selling the Exploder and buy a used F150. Price wise, you can probably just about do an even swap for something equivilent in year and mileage. I wouldn't let it hold you back.

Just so you know, the laws in most states require brakes on any trailer over 3000# and some are lower than that. Buying a boat that is too small for your anticipated use just so you can tow it with your current vehicle is not a good plan. Buy the boat you really "need" and if that means you need a bigger tow vehicle -- so be it. You can't have it both ways. Too big of a boat and too small of tow vehicle is an unsafe combination. Too small of boat and your current vehicle makes for an unhappy boating experience. If the family ain't happy you ain't happy either.

Another option is to do what some people I know do. They don't buy a tow vehicle, they just use a Marina. A guy I bought my boat from just got his mechanic to pull his boat out of the water at the end of the season and he would keep it in the marina during the season. People with large yachts don't own trailers and/or tow vehicles. They get the Marina or a company to take it out.

Re: Brand New Here...towing questions

Ron,

I have a similar rig... explorer, 4.0, auto, 2wd. With my 19 foot bowrider, gear and passengers i am at the limit. The truck pulls it ok and stops it ok. Operating it at its limit is defiantly not ideal and a full boating season of stopping took a toll on the brakes. They now have a shimmy while breaking. They are however original rotors that have 160k+ on them.

My trailer has no brakes i hope to add them this season. When i replace this tow rig it will defiantly be one with more towing power. Its not lacking enough to make me switch just for that reason but i feel like a grandpa babying it around. The worst problem you might have is the trans, they have a pretty bad reputation in our trucks.
Use good fluid and a cooler if you haven't already. I can recommend a good forum for your truck. If you need it pm me not sure if i can mention it here.
Good luck!
