I am in the process of refinishing my 1990 bravo one outdrive. While laying it on its side so I can apply the primer, I notice there is done fear oil leaking from the water intake holes, is this normal?

Oil should not be leaking from that area, are you sure it's oil? Was there any water showing up in the drive oil when changed?

I just bought this boat this year so this is pretty much the first time I've serviced the drive. The oil is blueish/greenish in color so I'm pretty sure it's gear oil. There are no metal shavings in it and when you turn the shafts they are tight, no play whatsoever.
I really just assumed the oil came from the water intake holes because after I primed one side and let it set for a few hours, I came back out to notice the oil all over the plywood.

Stand the drive straight up and pull the plug out of the bottom. The plug will either be on the bottom side on the starboard side or behind the prop. Pull the plug out and let the gear oil drain out. Also remove the plug on the top section which is also on the starboard side to allow easier draining. Once drained look at the lube and determine if there is anything else any there besides the lube. If there is let us know and we can determine best path forward

Well when I drained the oil, there was no water in it that I can recall. It was nice and blueish green. Right now I have the lower unit separated from the upper.

With no water seen your in good shape. Since you separated the halves you need to pressure test the drive. With that you need something to put in about 20 psi and see if it holds pressure. My guess is you saw some oil coming from the connection between the two halves when seperated

The halves have been separated for a few weeks now. I just now got around to working on the lower unit. The lower unit till now has been hanging from my rafters. I just got around to working on it so when I layed it on its starboard side to prime it, that's when I noticed the oil a few hours later on the plywood.
Could I just be over thinking this or what? When it was on the boat, I didn't have any problems whatsoever. My oil reservoir was full all season long, that I can recall. I do know my alarm never went off.
I do know the oil was nice in color with no shavings or anything in it.

Ayuh,... If the upper, 'n lower are separated,.... I'm guessin' yer just seein' residule oil leakin' outa the port that goes to the upper unit,....

The lower is empty of oil Right,..??

I am assuming that the oil leaking from the water inlet holes was before you split the upper and lower sections of the drive ? Best thing would be put it all back together and do a pressure test of the complete outdrive. Unless the oil you originally saw was some spillage from taking the outdrive off of the transom assembly, there would have to be a leak somewhere . . .

Ok what Ill do is put them back together and do a pressure test on the entire unit this weekend. What im "Hoping" is that when I separated the two halves, oil spilled into the lower end causing the fluid to spill out of the lower unit.

I think you will be fine and the pressure test will verify

To pressure test one half of either drive unit, you'd have to find/create a way to block off the oil passage quad ring seal found right next to the water passage O-ring. Something such as these pricey block of tools. http://www.moto-stops.com/products/m...ure-tester.php
