2000 7.4 mpi and B3: engine s/n:0M022102 Transom s/n: 0M208877 Sterndrive s/n: unknown
Found gear oil in back of bilge even when not running
; no leaks from hose, connector at transom assembly or bottle.
Pulled drive; gear oil in bellows
. Saw no traces of water intrusion in bellows or when the gear oil was drained from drive.
Cleaned gear oil from bellows; bellows looks good and flexible. U-joints look good; gimbal bearing smooth and turns easy.
Pressure test drive; will not hold pressure and soapy water spray finds bubbles from a couple spots around perimeter of carrier assembly.
I have service manual 28/11 but thinking
for doing this for the 1st time I'll pay someone and watch them do it.
If I were to try this myself or in preparing for what someone else will be doing and the parts needed:
Parts:
1-ring nut wrench
2-carrier assembly 86779a1
3-seal 807006 (part of carrier assembly?)
4-washer 41613
5-o-ring 861844
Procedure:
Is there parts of sm 28 starting at 3a-17 or a separate documented procedure for this type of seal replacement?
Anything else to be aware or watch out?
Does it matter that I do not know nor can I find the sterndrive s/n for getting the right parts?
The po had everything on the outside of the transom painted with a greenish protective paint so there are no stickers and the port side of the housing has any numbers not recognizable, the Merc label on the intake manifold covers only lists the transom s/n, the tag by the starter only lists the engine s/n.
Thanks for any feedback.
