1994 searay sundancer 270 7.4 bravo 3 took it out first time today it ran ok once she heated up I slowed down and it died wouldn't start probably coil vaper lock ect going to order new coil and all that. However I noticed when I put it in N and rev it up bout 2000 rpms she slams into gear for a sec.... didnt do this on land.. I had to take the shiftier cable off to replace boot I put it back as close as possible cant be far off SO I am assuming this is a adjustment issue? If so what way do I adjust it? IT goes into Reverse and Forward fine otherwise.

Thanks.

Being a 94 it should be a carb and therefore its not vapor lock or the coil, it most likely the carb needs rebuilding

The slamming into gear when in neutral may be it needs a new shift cable, but it may be the shifter and lubrication.

If you push button in and go to throttle only mode, and can rev the motor while moving the handle in reverse and it doesn't go in gear, then its the shifter. If it still goes in gear then its the cable

OK i will try it in reverse/N I cleaned cable and lubricated it with drive oil when i had it out cable did not look old. AS for engine it was weird as hell started good power was great Slowed down to check something and she stalled. I was spraying starting fluid and it wouldn't even putt it showed spark but weak to me. Sat for 20 mins was able to get it running idles good but after like 5 mins she will rev up and down up and down and crap out of course it was fine on land always is!!. The cap and rotor is already new coil looks older then hell so replacing it any ways.

Also I did rebuild the carb myself it didn't look dirty but may just go drop it off and have it done case I messed something up.

Sounds like a fuel issue, so carb or pump. If carb is flooding then no matter how much starting fluid is used it won't fire.

Have you tried giving it close to full throttle to see if it would start?

OK so I ran down to the slip it started right up but after idle for 3 or so mins she stalled. But before it did that I put in N/Reverse it slammed into forward... Then I sprayed wd40 all over cable mechanism ect then try again and it didn't do it was fine.. so maybe something was binding up in the handle or something will have to watch out for it for now. The gas its self is good I put 90 gals in it today I dumped the fuel/water separator no water/debris, I am going to replace the fuel pump it is probably due any ways since boat sat and call local company that rebuilds carbs I have used them few times with good results hope this fixes it.

Thanks for the help.

put in N/Reverse it slammed into forward...

If it slipped into gear it should have gone into reverse not forward

I thin your flooding

Your fuel pump is belt driven and jsut for kicks pull the plug on the housing (not the fuel pump) and see if fuel and oil doesn't flow out, it should not

Will do when i changed the oil in the housing when I did the water pump it did smell like it had some fuel in it but i was told that was normal and happens over time if oil is not changed? The guy before me did not take care of boat in the end.

Rebuilt carb installed looks like new all tuned up still waiting on fuel pump. She runs a lot better no longer stalls went on a nice cruise power feels good. However I still have one issue the first cold start of the day It is really really hard to start it will putt then go flat then lot more cranking and pumping throttle for a good 2 mins once she fires and gets goin its good fires right up afterwards.....I checked the choke but really hard to see it when caking will have to get someone else to help me its 90% closed to start off with should it be closed all the way?

The carb may be leaking or its just drying out after enough time. The old Q jets had issues with this. You should have a antisiphon valve on the tank which would keep the fuel from draining back.

Before you crank the first time cold, look down the carb and have someone pump the throttle and see if you see any gas. If not, the fuel bowl is empty. If you see fuel then check that the choke is closing when its first pumped
