Hey Guys, Last ride last fall, purfect day, water flat, 80 Deg., no clouds or wind, 30 + miles from the ramp on IL river. The starboard tach dropped 600 RPM as the engine suddenly loaded down for 15 seconds then released. Immediatly pulled back to check out and found engine was fine but something was up with the drive. Idled back on port power (3 hrs ho hum) and went home.

Now to the point, (I thought you'd like the story).

My question is where is the best source (quality and price) for parts???????

Just getting into my Starbord 89 Bravo One drive off my 292 SR1 Formula. I plan on gutting the entire drive, Just pulled the drive this week opened the upper and found debris. Disassembled upper and found one of the Timken tapered roller bearings on the drive gear had seized and inner race spun on the gear hub destroying both. Also the splines of the yoke had twisted about 10 degrees immediatly ahead of the gear engagement. I was very surprised it didn't snap, there must have been considerable heat involved which softened the shaft. Will carefully inspect all components and prepare a shopping list. Thank you all for your input!!

E-Bay...Always worth a shot.
Get creative too.
I've found parts using mis-spelled words ex: MeCruiser rather than MeRcruiser etc...

Thanks dubs283. Yes I have the manual. As far as the tools . . . Kinda interesting. My prior boat was a 1985 Formula 272 SR1. Twin 350's, Alpha drives. I shelled one of the drives one day. Ended up being the gears in the lower. I also had the manual. As you know, Merc. uses a lot of pictures in their factory manuals. Most all the "Special" merc tools are pictured in use in those photos. Being a CAD engineer and Tool & Die maker I had an idea. Scan the pictures, import them into my CAD environment, using a micrometer, measure some component pictured in the photo then scale the photo up in CAD until that component measures correctly. At that point I was able to pull dimensions on the Special Tool pictured in the photo and build it. Ended up with a dozen or more Merc. tools on the bench and was ready to re-build the drive. (gotto luv American inginuity!!!!:D). I'm not sure if all of them will work for the Bravo, some I have already used. If not I have a method to make the ones that don't. Thanks again for the reply!

HA HA HA. Thanks tpenfield for the responce!! Hey I really owe you an ATTABOY. I took a look at your posting of your 242 project. I love what you've done and the talent you've demonstrated. Even the way you presented the material for viewing. Very professional, Nice Job.

I'm fairly new to this forum and I like how you posted the pic of your ride with your user name. How do you do that?? I'd like to put mine up as well so you can see my boat. It's the 3rd Formula I've owned since 1989. They really are a fine piece of machinery. People come up to me all the time Re: my 89 292 and simply can't believe the boat is 20+ yrs old. Later.

craigslist is your friend. I scored a rebuilt upper gearcase on there for 500 bucks a couple of years ago. Still had the assembly lube on it and works perfectly. You can mate a used upper to an SEI lower and be done with it cheaply.

You can try these site for parts . . . http://www.ebasicpower.com http://www.mercruiserparts.com or do a unit level replacement as the other guys have mentioned.

regarding the picture: I had to make a real small pic of my boat and then post it as my 'avatar' in the profile settings update section.

good luck with it. let us know how it goes.
