Bravo stuck in forward

Anyone had any issues with with the upper drive being stuck in forward gear? What was the trouble that was causing the trouble

Howdy

My first guess is the shift cable came loose/broke. the bravo drive has the easiest shift mechanism going.
What boat?
How old is it?
When was the last time maintenance was done and what did you do?

Two different problems
Did it get stuck while engine was running and wouldn't return to neutral
Or
Did somebody shift it while the engine wasn't running and now you can't start the engine?
Same problem with two completely different fixes.

Goos point Muc, if its stuck in forward and you cannot get it back into neutral, then find the slave solenoid on top the motor.



On the two large terminals on top jump across the two terminals for a second while someone is keeping pressure on the throttle handle. When the motor starts to crank over the handle should go back into neutral.

That is if you have a slave solenoid and this is not a 496 with a relay

If it got shifted into gear with the rpm's above idle the cone clutch may be jammed into the cone on the gear. I've had some luck pulling the assy out of the upper and rattling the shaft with an air hammer to un-stick things.

Here's where I am with this... I'm working on this for someone else. I am very familiar with Alpha units but hardly any experience with Bravo units. I assume it was shifted into gear while running. Tried to contact the owner today to find that out but no luck today
Trying to isolate where the trouble was I did remove the drive. I was unable to disconnect the shift cable from the drive because it was in forward and could not get to where the cable connects so I disconnected the "core" cable and pulled it out with the drive. Wrong thing to do?? All does work free with the shifting in the boat now but I cannot shift the drive. Should it shift off the boat . Not running?
Where do I go from here?

If the shifting mechanism is working you should be able to just pull the core and the drive should shift into fwd and release the core.http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/11/11a3r5x.pdf

Yes, the bravo is harder to shift then the alpha due to the spring detent ball, but should do it. The shifter being in forward should not be a big issue removing the drive, it would just need to come out a bit farther until the cable pulled the link bar out.

Removing the core is not an issue, just slide it back in and hook it up.

Being so hard to shift I would remove the top and rear cover off the upper drive and have a look at the shift plate and gears
