my dad just bought a brand new bass boat with a 2005 merc efi 4-stroke. he's very excited, a big jump for him.

so we're headed to canada in a few weeks, where the boat will see water for the first time. he's there for 2 weeks, so he'll have plenty of time for break-in, etc.

talking with him this weekend, he already has everything required to do the 20 hr oil change. his plan is to run through the break-in period in 2 days, then have me help him pull the boat and change the oil (he doesn't get around so well). he can then enjoy the boat and engine for the rest of his vacation.

assuming we follow the proper procedures, will this plan work? i don't want him cooking his brand new engine by pushing it too hard in the beginning and having problems later.

thanks-

Your engine will not know if you went through the break-in process in one day or two weeks. The important thing is to follow Mercs recommendations in the owners manual.

Re: break-in question

thanks fellas. my dad is 53, but he has a bad limp from spinal surgery he had several years ago.

he follows directions to a T. we'll follow the manual and blow through those first 20 hrs as fast as possible.

i'll pull the boat, change the oil for him, and launch. he'll be in heaven with his new baby for the rest of the vacation.
