breaking a coil

On a 1980 Evinrude 115, I've busted the bottom port side coild twice now and have use up all my spares. It seems to happen when I put the cowl on, I must be pushing against the coil where the plug wire connects as I've broken the tip off twice now.

So, what can be done to fix this? Can I re-route the plug wire? My cowl is in rough shape and is a bugger to get on, but will a better cowl fix this?

And I run at 30 mph on three cylinders, will I hit 40 with 4?

Can't see any problems there , but you you should find out why this happens , are you using the wrong cowl or the wrong coils for this engine ??

It should not be any problems if all parts are as delivered from factory .

You should NOT be running the engine without all cylinders working , and the answer ... my 90hp does 40 on ONE coil ;) so yes I guess it would hit 40 with a healthy 115 hp.

Re: breaking a coil

The cowl is pretty beaten up so I'm thinking of buying one in better shape. Just want to be sure it will help. I've heard from two people (one the local boat shop and the other is the guy who would sell me a new cowl) that this is a common problem.

As to running on three cylinders, I didn't know the coil was broken and it was my first drive with the boat so I had no baseline to compare to. It just didn't seem to be running as fast as I thought it would, my tach wasn't working and then I found the broken coil. All has been fixed and I am trying again tonight.

New voltmeter, tack is working and the motor seems to be running better on muffs.
