Re: Briggs motor missing

Good too know you are all good to go.....my yard is half mowed right now, and it is not a small yard.

So far I got mine apart and as I suspected the exhaust lobe on the cam is rounded off. So now get the gaskets tomorrow and 2 new lifters and a cam and all should be good.

But ya never know......LOL.

How many hours or years did it take to round off the cam lobes? Ive been using 30 HD oil until the last change when I noticed it calls for SAE 30.

30HD or 30ND?

30 HD would be "heavy duty" (castrol?) SAE 30 weight oil, and perfectly fine for the engine (read the label on the back).

30 ND would be 30 weight non-detergent oil, suitable for use as a lube in a compressor, but not an internal combustion engine.

Well got it in '07 and I am pretty good at routine oil changes on it, not so good at checking the valves, well I never had checked them till it did not want to run for crap. Actually was not aware of them needing that much attention, but I am educated now......lol.

As for what may have took out the cam, I am sure with the tolerences being so loose that over time the lifter just beat the snot out of the cam lobe, and made it pretty round.

I will get some pics up tonight when I get home,

Uh oh, Sounds like that would happen to my cam w my rocker getting loose over a long time and running it that way. I too never bothered to check the lash until the valve had dropped out. I used Castrol 30 HD until the last change when I got Havoline SAE 30 but I guess its the same oil. I changed it about every year, and less hrs. than recommended. It was never very dirty. Good luck w the fix. Do they make performance cams for Briggs motors:D?

Yep the Castrol oil would be fine for your engine. Actually just did an oil change to dad's new lawn mower, and my generator this past weekend using Castrol 30 HD.

And yes they do make performance cams;

Probably not something I would want to put in a Briggs used for work instead of play.
