Briggs outboard issue

I bought this last summer. The first few times out it was great...cruised at over 15mph in a rented jonboat. One afternoon the prop got aerated somehow and ever since it hasn't run right.

I took it to a master B&S shop, and they replaced the rev limiter with an 'updated' one. Unfortunately it still runs kinda off. I can't get it over 13mph now.

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem.

Chris,

Perhaps the "new" rev limiter does not allow the engine to turn as fast.

The Briggs shop should be able to tach. the engine and tell you what it is turning at WOT.

Re: Briggs outboard issue

I may have to take it in to a regular outboard shop then. The 'Master' B&S shops don't have a way to test the motor in water since they usually repair lawnmowers. I even called B&S directly and they were stumped on how to properly diagnose the problem without it being in a barrel.

Re: Briggs outboard issue

Chris, DJ is exactly right, and it's done on purpose. Did you have a 2002 model? The new rev limiter that they installed governs the engine to 4800 rpm. Bad news is, it doesn't go as fast. Good news is, the engine will probably last longer. Anyway, it's not an engine problem, it's like that by design. :)

EDIT: Chris, I just re-read your first post and you said the engine still runs kind of "Off". Does it run rough or just not as fast? I have one of these motors and at WOT it feels and sounds like it should rev more. The same size engine on a lawn mower certainly revs faster. Not sure, but I assume they limit the RPM's to 4800 in an attempt to extend engine life. Someone, I can't remember who, suggested that the L/U may not be able to handle the high RPM either. Anyway, I have not had any troubles with mine after maybe 15 hours. Are you happy with your water mower so far?

Re: Briggs outboard issue

3500 is correct, the L/u rod stretch and failure is 4200 rpm.(idea)Mabey change prop,is the prop on tight?not slipping? Ect, don,t know allot about boats, and outboards,I do know a bit about L/Mrs,I've worked on a many,
