Try a little anti-seize compound on your spark plug threads next time you have them out.

Lew, that's a god recommendation. I've got Merc Special Lube 101, Merc Perfect Seal, and a spray can of PowerBlaster. Any of these suitable for this, or do I need to go pick up a can of anti-seize?

Re: Broke a sparkplug, and how!!!

You know I have used anti-seize on sparkplugs in aluminum heads but I am not convinced that it actually helps. And I recall George on Boatered saying that it can cause trouble in marine engines (dissimilar metals in wet environnent??). What I do is use some motor oil on the threads, or even OMC triple guard grease. I find that with replacing the plugs once a season, I really never have trouble getting them out.

Re: Broke a sparkplug, and how!!!

I'm going to pass this along to the guy buying the boat. I bought it 5yrs. ago with a new tuneup recently done. We used the boat 4 times, then parked and covered it. I don't know what the guy used on the threads, if anything, but they stuck anyway. I will at least warn my guy that I just put them in, dry. He can take it from there. On my autos I use camshaft breakin lube. It takes the heat and is slightly sticky. Alls well that ends well. Thanks.

Lou, George was talking about anti-sieze being left on plugs for a long time (years) if plugs are at least removed and checked before each season I dont think it is a problem. Ive been using 'Kopr-Kote' for 15 years and have never had the problems that George indicated. Aldo

I'm wondering about this anti-sieze question. While working on this engine, I noticed several points of dissimilar metal contact. This warning about anti-sieze, is it supposed to act as a catalist to start erosion? Is there not a problem if the metals are in contact dry? I always thought the stuff was aluminium flour and linseed oil, basicly.

Re: Broke a sparkplug, and how!!!

I am not really sure about the chemistry/physics involved but if you have 2 metals in a liquid medium (esp saltwater) the less noble (like aluminum) will be eroded in favor of the more noble (like stainless steel). Now in this boat you have steel shell sparkplugs in an iron head, so what you were dealing with is most likely just plain old rust, not galvanic corrsion (unless cast iron is less noble than the steel). I am not sure of the effect of the antiseize (has copper in it) in combination with the iron head steel plug. I have found that just using some grease on them seems to keep the corrosion down so they are easy to take out. As an example, since I used to use it (antiseize) on my cars with alu heads, I also used it on my 4.0 Jeep motor (cast iron) the last time I did the plugs (2 yrs ago) and it didn't seem to help, in fact it seemed a little more difficult to reomve them that the first time (from the factory plugs, no antisieze). All of my 2 cycle stuff (blower, snow blower, weedwacker) have alu heads, I don't use antiseize on them, and no probs getting the plug out (maybe the oil in the fuel mix helps). Oh well another one of those little mysteries.

Learned a lot from this discussion.

Just an idea, but you might want to tell the new owner to attach a plastic or metal guard under the back fiberglass where the transom and the motor cover meet---right above this problem plug. Water from skiiers entering the boat and standing on the back platform will drip in there and continue to rust this back plug. I had this problem on an old Cobalt at the point where the engine cover met the back platform.
